Lisnard is one of four Frenchmen through to the second round as qualifier
Thierry Ascione defeated Vladimir Voltchkov 6-2, 6-4 while No. 5 seed
Fabrice Santoro overcame Argentina’s Diego Veronelli 6-3, 6-0 to maintain
his hopes of a third title on French soil (Lyon 1997, Marseille 1999).
Ascione recorded his first ATP match win in Bangkok last week before losing
to eventual champion Taylor Dent. Nicolas Mahut defeated second seed
Younes El Aynaoui on Monday as the French were 4-0 in the opening two days
with five more hoping to join them in round two on Wednesday.
Elsewhere in first round action, Victor Hanescu set up a meeting with
fellow Romanian Andrei Pavel on Wednesday after defeating Czech qualifier
Pavel Snobel 6-4, 6-1, while No. 8 seed Hicham Arazi brushed aside Spain’s
Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 6-3, 6-0 to set up a clash with David Ferrer.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Santoro: "Everyone here is excited to have an ATP tournament in Metz. All the
French players are happy to be here, those of us who played Davis Cup against
Holland last year had great memories of this place."
Ascione: "I was tired coming from Bangkok on Friday but I was lucky to get a
bye in the first round of qualifying here. Now I hope to keep winning and get
a special exempt into Lyon next week. Lyon is my home tournament."
On playing Taylor Dent last week in Bangkok: "[Dent] is a tennis genius. I
played well and he beat me 6-2, 6-1 in 40 minutes. If the match hadn't been
televised it would have been over in 30 minutes!"
"My goal is to reach the Top 100 and get into the main draw in Australia next
year."
