Robredo Cruises; Gonzalez Survives
Top seed Tommy Robredo cruised through to the quarterfinals of the Open
de Moselle in Metz with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard
on Thursday. The Spaniard, looking for his first title of the year, will
now meet Romanian Andrei Pavel for a place in the semifinals.
Fernando Gonzalez had a much tougher passage to the last eight, surviving
a third-set tie-break before moving through 6-2, 6-7(6), 7-6(5) against
Germany's Tomas Behrend. The Chilean had a match point in the second set
tie-break, but put the disappointment behind him to earn a clash against
Spain's David Ferrer in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Behrend's compatriot Philipp Petzschner enjoyed more success
after defeating fellow qualifier Thierry Ascione of France to reach his
first ATP quarterfinal in just his third main draw event ('s-Hertogenbosch,
Stuttgart). He now meets fourth seed Arnaud Clement, a 7-5, 7-5 winner
over Italian Davide Sanguinetti.
In the all-French battle on Central Court, fifth seed Fabrice Santoro
came through 7-6(4), 6-4 against Olivier Mutis. Santoro will now meet
Alexander Popp on Friday for a place in the semifinals.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Clement: "It was a tough battle, only a couple of points here and there
decided the match. His shots are dangerous because they are very low.
My level was very good today, it's been a good start to this tournament
but there's a lot more to be done if I want to win it."
Robredo: "The score sounds easy but the first set was hard-fought. I had
a good time on the court and was concentrated from the first point to the
last. My goal is to keep playing like in the first two rounds here. I am
the top seed here but every player is dangerous. Pavel has got a lot of
experience and will be difficult to beat."
Ferrer: "I really did not expect to reach my first quarterfinal indoors
this week but I feel good on court and I like the surface, it's not too
fast. I hope to continue at this level until the end of the season as I
want to finish around 60-70 in the [ATP] rankings."
