The final of the Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon will be a
French-Brazilian affair. Mathieu is the eighth French finalists
since the inaugural event in 1987, and three Frenchmen have
captured the title; Arnaud Clement in 2000, Fabrice Santoro in
1997, and Yannick Noah in 1987.
Paul-Henri Mathieu, who captured the Moscow title as a wild card
last week, takes on Gustavo Kuerten, who has made it past the
Lyon quarterfinals for the first time in a total of four
appearances.
"Everybody on the tour knows about Paul-Henri's capacity and it
was just a matter of time for his strong results to come. He has
been working very hard and in the correct way with his coach and
it is only right that he is successful. Tomorrow I need to stay
mentally strong to win, said Kuerten after the semifinals.
Both finalists are looking for back-to-back titles. As a qualifier
Mathieu won his career-first title in Moscow one week ago, while
Kuerten claimed his 17th career-title at home in Brazil last month.
