Mauresmo Withdraws from Linz
LINZ, Austria – French world No.4 Amelie Mauresmo has been forced to withdraw
from this week's $585,000 Generali Ladies Linz presented by Raiffeissenlandesbank
Oberosterreich due to a left adductor strain. Mauresmo, the defending
champion at the Tier II event, was bothered by the same injury at the end of
2004 and in the first half of 2005.
"I'm really disappointed I can't return to Linz to defend my title," said
Mauresmo. "I had such a great week there last year and I was hoping to have a
chance to play well again as I try to qualify for the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour \
Championships. As everyone has seen I've had a couple of tough weeks
(falling in her opening matches in Moscow and Zurich), and I really need to
have some rest so I can be in my best possible form if I qualify for
Los Angeles.
"I wish everyone a great tournament this week and I hope to be back next year
to try and regain the title."
As a result of the withdrawal, the following changes have been made to the
singles draw:
* Tatiana Golovin (FRA) has been promoted to the No.9 seeding position and will move to Mauresmo's position at the top of the draw (Line 1);
* Golovin's original place in the draw (Line 3) will be filled by either a qualifier or lucky loser.
Mauresmo is currently in 5th position in the Porsche Race to the Sony Ericsson
WTA Tour Championships presented by Porsche (November 8-13, 2005).
The first four qualifiers have been announced – Kim Clijsters, Lindsay Davenport,
Maria Sharapova and Mary Pierce.
