Serra Downs Andreev to Win First ATP Title
Frenchman Florent Serra defeated fellow unseeded player Igor
Andreev 6-3, 6-4 in the final of the BCR Open in Bucharest on
Sunday to claim his first ATP title.
Serra got the better start going up 3-0 in the first set with
two breaks of serve. Andreev managed to get one break back,
but again lost his serve in the final game of the set. The
Russian quickly bounced back and took a 2-0 lead in the second
set. Serra raised his game and claimed the last four games of
the match.
Serra, who was appearing in his first ATP final, had never reached
a quarterfinal at the ATP level before this week. The 24-year-old
Frenchman has only played in six ATP events this season and had
never advanced past the second round.
Serra won two ATP Challenger events this year (Mexico City and
Rimini). Two weeks ago he reached the second round of the US Open,
having defeated Stefan Koubek in the opening round.
Serra was making his first appearance at the BCR Open in Romania.
En route to the final, he upset three seeded players: No. 2 Filippo
Volandri, No. 3 Andrei Pavel and No. 7 Paul-Henri Mathieu.
With the win, Serra claims 35 INDESIT ATP 2005 Race Points and
44,100.
Andreev, who was appearing in Bucharest for the third time and posts
an impressive 9-3 record, was looking to pick up his second ATP crown
after earlier this season winning in Valencia, defeating David Ferrer
in the final.
The 22-year-old Russian was playing in his fourth career ATP final
and his second in Bucharest. He lost last year’s final to Jose
Acasuso 6-3, 6-0.
On his way to the title match, Andreev posted wins over two seeds:
top seeded Mariano Puerta and No. 4 Victor Hanescu. Andreev saved
three match points against Hanescu in the semifinals.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID:
Serra: “I feel very, very good. I’m very happy. I played well
today. I played a very good match. My coach told me that I had to
be aggressive. I was very lucky in the first round, I was only about
one or two centimeters from losing.”
“I won my first challenger earlier this year in Mexico City but this
is different, this is ATP level. I have to continue like this and work
even more on my game.”
Andreev: “Serra was playing really well. Of course I’m a little bit
disappointed because I was playing well during all the week. Today I
couldn’t find my game, but anyway I’m happy to have reached the
final. Hopefully I can do a little better next year.”
“He played really well on the important points. He was very solid
and was going for his shots. I’m really happy with my performance
here this week.”
