Gasquet wins first ATP title

Fourth seed Richard Gasquet celebrated his 19th birthday by winning
his first ATP Tour title with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Max Mirnyi in
the final of the Nottingham Open on Saturday.
The Frenchman, seeded fourth, always looked in control of the encounter,
breaking the Belarussian in his first service game of the match, before
comfortably taking the first set 6-2.
Between sets Mirnyi took a three-minute time-out to treat an injury to
his right hand. But the eighth seed never really got into gear, his serve
in particular appearing a shadow of that deployed to such effect against
Olivier Rochus in the semi-finals.
In contrast, Gasquet was playing beautifully-timed groundstrokes that
often left his opponent stranded, Mirnyi having no answer as the Frenchman
breezed through the second set 6-3 to claim his first tour title.
With the victory coming after his quarter-final appearance at Queen's Club
last week, and against an opponent who has previously reached the fourth
round at Wimbledon, Gasquet will now head to SW19 full of confidence.
After the win Gasquet - who is seeded 27th for Wimbledon - was presented
with a birthday cake on court, while Mirnyi led the crowd in a rendition
of 'Happy Birthday'.
