Tennis Masters Cup Doubles Heats Up

The Field
The top four teams in the ATP Doubles Race are all in contention to claim year-
end No. 1 honors at Tennis Masters Cup Doubles in Houston. America's Bryan brot
hers, Bob and Mike, and the team of Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi are the fron
t runners for No. 1 and are separated by just 24 points.

Tennis Masters Cup Doubles Qualifiers

The Californian twins (pictured above) won their first Grand Slam title at Rola
nd Garros in June and have been to the semifinals or better of three Tennis Mas
ters Series tournaments this season. This high-octane duo also has impressive h
ead-to-head records against the big teams.
2003 titles: Barcelona, Roland Garros, Nottingham, Cincinnati
Mahesh Bhupathi/Max Mirnyi
The team won five titles in 2003, including Tennis Masters Monte-Carlo and Tenn
is Masters Madrid. Mirnyi, nicknamed "The Beast," claimed the No. 1 doubles wor
ld ranking midway through the season.

Jonas Bjorkman/Todd Woodbridge
Bjorkman and Woodbridge successfully defended their Wimbledon doubles title in
July, marking Woodbridge's record eighth Wimbledon men's doubles title. By winn
ing the US Open, Woodbridge moved to 77 career doubles titles. The Australian e
qualed Tom Okker's Open era record of 78 titles when he won Stockholm with Bjor
kman in October.

The runaway ATP Doubles Race champions of 2002 have won six titles in 2003 - in
cluding Tennis Masters Series Hamburg - and reached the final of the Australian
Open.
2003 titles: Memphis, Acapulco, Houston, Hamburg, London, Basel
Wayne Arthurs/Paul Hanley
The Australians won four titles in their second full season together, including
Tennis Masters Series titles in Rome and Paris (defeating Llodra/Santoro in bo
th finals).
2003 titles: Rotterdam, Rome, Shanghai, Paris
Michael Llodra/Fabrice Santoro
The French pair won the Australian Open title in January, avenging their loss t
he previous year to Knowles/Nestor. They reached Tennis Masters Series finals i
n Monte Carlo, Rome and Paris.

Martin Damm/Cyril Suk
Damm, 31, and Suk, 36, are the veterans of the ATP doubles circuit, but remain
a highly-effective duo. They won three titles this season and Suk qualified for
the doubles championship for the seventh time.
2003 titles: Doha, 's-Hertogenbosch, Kitzbuhel
Gaston Etlis/Martin Rodriguez
The Argentine duo has made five semifinals in 2003, including at the Australian
Open. They claimed the eighth and final playing berth when David Rikl and Lean
der Paes withdrew from the tournament due to Paes' recent illness.

Wayne Black/Kevin Ullyett (Alternate team)
The Zimbabwean duo made a late-season charge towards Houston and eventually cla
imed the alternate spot. The 2001 US Open doubles champions won the Munich titl
e and reached three other finals.
