Frenchmen Dent Woodbridge's Hopes
Todd Woodbridge's hopes of setting a new record for the most doubles
titles won in the Open era took a hit at Tennis Masters Cup Doubles on
Saturday. For the second consecutive tournament, French pair Michael
Llodra and Fabrice Santoro defeated Woodbridge and Jonas Bjorkman 7-6(1),
3-6, 6-4 in the first match of the tournament, being played in Houston.
The match lasted 2 hr., 55 min.
Llodra/Santoro defeated Bjorkman/Woodbridge in the last tournament of the
regular season at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris. The teams have split
their four matches in 2003.
Llodra said: 巣e've won one match today but it's not finished. The first
goal is to make the semis and then we'll see from there.
Santoro said: 斉oth times we've beaten them it was a tight match. I think
today was a better match than last week. At this level when both teams play
well, the match can turn either side at the end. We just tried to keep our
serve, to concentrate, and then take the first opportunity we had. We made
it so it was great.
In a major upset in the third and final match of the day, Argentine duo
Gaston Etlis and Martin Rodriguez defeated second seeds Mahesh Bhupathi
and Max Mirnyi 6-4, 6-4. Etlis and Rodriguez came into the tournament
when No. 7 team David Rikl and Leander Paes withdrew due to Paes' recent
illness. The Argentines did not win a tournament during the season;
Bhupathi and Mirnyi have won five titles this season.
