Mauresmo Puts France Into Semis
France has secured a place in the World Group Semifinals after sweeping aside
Italy 3-0 in Rimini. Amelie Mauresmo sealed Italy's fate with a comfortable
76(2) 62 victory over Francesco Schiavone in the first of Sunday's reverse
singles rubbers.
Mauresmo and Mary Pierce put France firmly in control in their quarterfinal
tie with Italy yesterday, both winning their singles matches in straight sets.
Pierce secured France's second point of the day with a 63 64 victory over the
higher-ranked Schiavone, Mauresmo having earlier cruised to her 11th
consecutive Fed Cup singles win by defeating Silvia Farina 62 61.
France joins Russia and Austria in the semifinals in November, with the final
place going to the winner of the quarterfinal tie between Spain and Belgium.
France's opponent will not be known until the four nations are re-drawn prior
to the semifinals.
