France Takes Commanding 2-0 Lead over Spain

Spain find themselves with a real battle on their hands if they are to
stay in the 2003 Fed Cup, as comfortable victories by Nathalie Dechy and
Amelie Mauresmo have given the visitors a commanding 2-0 lead.
Nathalie Dechy delivered the first point for France with a 63 64 defeat of
Magui Serna. With a small but very vocal contingent of French supporters
cheering her on, she gave the visitors the perfect start to the quarterfinal
tie.
Despite losing her first service game, she broke back immediately and
clinched the vital break in the seventh game to lead 4-3. Playing
aggressively from the back of the court, she found a reply to Serna’s
tactics of using the drop shot at every opportunity and broke again to
take the first set 6-3, a crucial foothold in the match which the captains
acknowledged would probably be key to the overall result.
In the second set, it was not until the seventh game that either player
managed to hold serve and at 4-5, Serna, having saved four match points,
was passed by Dechy on the fifth and the French were in the lead.
Admitting that she had been nervous at the start Dechy said, “I was very
happy with the way that I played and pleased that my plan to try to keep
the rallies short had delivered the desired result.”
“It was very important for the team to begin with a victory,” she added
afterwards.
Despite concerns over a lack of fitness and recent matches, Amelie Mauresmo
showed few signs of rustiness as she powered past Maria Sanchez Lorenzo 63
63 in the second rubber.
As if the pressure of playing your first Fed Cup singles match was not
already enough with your country trailing, Sanchez Lorenzo soon found
herself 0-3 down to the world No.6 and was unable to recover the break,
losing the first set 6-3. Mauresmo consistently foiled the Spaniard’s
advances to the net with an array of passing shots and powerful
groundstrokes, especially on the backhand side.
Having lost her serve in the opening game of the second set after a game
containing no less than eight deuces, the Spaniard finally broke Mauresmo
to briefly lead 2-1. But at that point, Mauresmo stepped up her game and
in spite of some spirited resistance from her opponent, especially when
coming back from 0-40 to break back for 3-3, ran out a convincing winner.
Having overcome a problem with a blister that had prevented her training
fully over the days preceding the tie, Mauresmo said afterwards, “I was
happy to have been able play my normal game. I prevented my opponent from
playing her game and the errors I made were probably due to not having
played many recent matches rather than any lack of concentration.”
Sanchez Lorenzo was disappointed but stated that “my serve let me down,
and winning each point took a lot out of me.”
The two captains will enjoy contrasting evenings. Guy Forget, the French
captain , who was delighted with the way his players performed, will be
able to relax a little in the knowledge that his team only have to win
one point tomorrow to advance to the semifinals. On the other hand, the
Spanish captain, Miguel Margets, knows that his team face an uphill task
tomorrow .
“I was disappointed that we didn’t win the first rubber because Amelie
was always going to be difficult to beat, but let’s hope that Sunday is
better for us than Saturday.”
Tomorrow's reverse singles will see Mauresmo take on Serna, followed by
Dechy against Sanchez Lorenzo.
