Mauresmo Puts France Into Semifinals
Amelie Mauresmo has put France into the Fed Cup semifinals with a 75 62
victory over Magui Serna in Oviedo. The French No. 1 defeated her Spanish
counterpart in one hour 37 minutes to give France an unbeatable 3-0 lead
over the host nation.
The match, which began under grey skies and some light drizzle was a tense
affair. With the Spanish crowd finally beginning to make more noise than the
French supporters, Serna got off to an ideal start by breaking Mauresmo in
the first game and surviving four deuces and two break points to go 2-0 up.
It was clear that Mauresmo’s plan was to rally with Serna to try to force
an error, but Serna was serving well. As the set neared its conclusion both
players became more tentative and the error count grew, but Serna earned a
chance to serve for the set by saving another break point at 4-3.
Mauresmo then demonstrated why she is, according to her captain,
Guy Forget, ‘one of the best clay court players in the world’. After
saving a set point on her own serve at 4-5, she ripped through Serna’s
next service game with three glorious passing shots. A disputed service
call in the next game added to Serna’s woes and Mauresmo then broke again
with excellent shot placement to take the set 75.
Serna valiantly tried to keep her country in the tie but Mauresmo wasn’t
about to let up and she began to make more errors as the second set
progressed, being broken in the fourth game to trail 3-1. Her misery
was complete when she double-faulted at match point, while serving at
2-5, to hand victory and a place in the 2003 semifinals to the French.
