Razzano Draws French Level in Portschach
Austria and France are level at 1-1 after the first day of their Fed Cup
World Group I tie in Portschach. Virginie Razzano, deputising for the
injured Amelie Mauresmo, defeated Tamira Paszek 63 63, after Yvonne
Meusburger had given Austria an early lead with a straight sets victory
over world No.15 Nathalie Dechy.
Currently ranked 116 places below Dechy, the 21-year-old Austrian displayed
little sign of nerves in front of the home crowd, seeing off her more
experienced French rival 76(3) 62 in the World Group I tie.
Dechy struggled to find her rhythm throughout the match and looked a shadow
of the player who reached this year's Australian Open semifinals. A break
down at 4-5 in the opening set, the French number two pulled herself back
on level terms, only to miss out in the subsequent tiebreak.
There was nothing close about the second set, with Dechy continuing to make
a string of unforced errors and Meusburger calmly taking advantage.
"I feel more than happy," Meusburger told Austrian television. "I really
don't feel as if there's that much difference between the top players and
the rest of us, at least in terms of how we actually play. And the more
matches like this I play, the better I feel I can get."
