Top seed Marat Safin will play his first round match on Tuesday
against up-and-coming 16-year-old Richard Gasquet. Although Gasquet
has only played in a handful of ATP events, this will be the second
time the young Frenchman has faced Safin. After making his stunning
ATP debut as a qualifier at the Tennis Masters Monte Carlo in April,
Gasquet fell to Safin 6-4, 6-1, in the second round.
In another interesting encounter on day two, Gustavo Kuerten takes
on No. 5 seed Younes El Aynaoui for the first time indoors. In their
only previous match, Kuerten won a three-set battle in en route to
the Monte Carlo title in 2001. El Aynaoui has won three titles this
year (Doha, Casablanca, Munich) and is looking to join Lleyton Hewitt,
Andre Agassi and Carlos Moya as four-time winners in 2002. Meanwhile,
Kuerten won his first title of the year last month at the Brasil Open.
Third seeded Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean will attempt to escape the
winless column against veteran countryman Cedric Pioline. Pioline
has dominated Grosjean in all five of their previous matches, but
the two haven’t met since Rotterdam in 2000. They have played one
another in Lyon on two separate occasions with Pioline winning in
three sets in both 1997 and '98.
