OPEN DE MOSELLE
METZ, FRANCE October 5, 2003
Clement Denies Gonzalez in Metz Final
Arnaud Clement won his second career ATP event (Lyon in 2000) when he
defeated free-swinging Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the
final of the inaugural Open de Moselle in Metz, France. Clement dropped
just one set in five matches in his first indoor event of the year.
Clement, who had lost three finals after winning Lyon in 2000, including
the 2001 Australian Open, becomes the second French player to win an ATP
event in 2003 after Julien Boutter in Casablanca. (Boutter who is from
Metz helped the tournament organizers run this year's event after
undergoing shoulder surgery on Sep. 11.)
Clement missed the first two months of 2003 with a wrist injury.
Gonzalez, playing his first indoor event of the season, advanced to his
second ATP final of 2003 after Washington (l. to Tim Henman).
Clement and Gonzalez are now tied in their head-to-head series (3-3).
The final lasted 1 hour and 43 minutes with Clement making the decisive
break in the sixth game of the final set.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Clement: "It's fantastic. Lyon 2000 was really a distant memory and it
feels great to win my second title in France again. I had lost a few
finals after Lyon and it would have hurt a lot to lose here.
"It's not just about this week's efforts, it's all the hard work I've
put in with my coach of two years, Remi Barbarin. Since getting together
the goal was to win my second ATP title, so I dedicate this victory to
him and his academy. It's not a relief but more like a great joy for
both of us to win this title.
"I expected such a match today against Fernando. He hits the ball very
hard and has a big serve. I couldn't let him dictate the match, I had
to take the ball early with my backhand and go to the net. My serve
helped me a lot, with a high first-serve percentage [63] and I served
more than 10 aces [12].
"It's been a great week for French tennis and I hope there will be more
titles to come in the rest of the season. I'm happy to join Julien
(Boutter) as the second ATP winner this year and I wish him a speedy
recovery. I'm also happy to have won here for the first edition of this
event. It's great for us French players to have opportunities like this
to play at home."
Gonzalez: "Unfortunately that's the way tennis goes. Just a couple of
points decided the match, it was the two points I lost to go 15-40 down
on my serve in the final set when he broke me, a let-cord and I missed
a forehand. I know Arnaud well, he's a great player and he played well
today. I was not surprised by his tactics today."
"My goal in 2004 is to reach the Top 10. I will have played two full
years on the ATP circuit meeting the best players and I think that
experience will help me get there. I just need more consistency."
FRENCHMEN WIN DOUBLES FINAL
Wild cards and childhood friends Julien Benneteau and Nicholas Mahut
upset top seeds Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro 7-6(2), 6-3 to win
their third consecutive event after the Bronx challenger in August and
the St. Jean de Luz challenger two weeks ago. Benneteau/Mahut had
shocked the No. 2 seeds Gaston Etlis and Martin Rodriguez in the
first round.
Llodra/Santoro were looking to win their second title of the year after
the Australian Open in January. Llodra/Santoro have qualified for the
Tennis Masters Cup Houston as Grand Slam winners and one of the top
eight doubles teams of 2003.
Benneteau said: "We have to thank (co-tournament director) Patrice
Dominguez because he gave us a wild card. We wouldn't be here holding
the cup if it wasn't for him. We wanted to play well to pay him back.
"It's such a great honour to beat two great players such as Fabrice and
Michael, Grand Slam champions, who will play the Masters. I respect them
a lot as players as well as human beings."
