OF HAMILCAR, GANDALF, AND SARUMAN
在Rivendell Frodo起身去找其他hobbits時見到了Hamilcar
由Hamilcar敘述被抓的故事
Black Rider把Ham當成Frodo抓走 Gandalf正好到達
Black Rider在渡口偷了船過河
Gandalf的馬Galeroc只好游過去
(Shadowfax又有新名字了 之前是Narothal
不過這時牠可能還不是來自Rohan)
全靠Galeroc的腳力Gandalf才追上Black Rider並救了Hamilcar
當然 他發現那不是Frodo時的心情難以言喻
Ham自己說He did not know whether he was relieved or disgusted when he
found it was only poor old Ham Bolger.
Gandalf從Ham那裡聽說Frodo進了Old Forest 於是去找Tom Bombadil
同時Black Rider也感到混亂
消息統整後首領發現Frodo似乎在同一晚同時出現在Bree和Crickhollow
新劇情大綱
巫師Saramond the White/Saramund the Grey/Grey Saruman送出訊息
Trotter聽說Black Rider出沒 在找Shire
Trotter通知Gandalf Gandalf離開 Trotter留下看守
Gandalf往東南去Rohan /Horserland
Gandalf知道自己一人無法對抗九戒靈
前往Angrobel/Irongarth請求Saramund協助
Saramund背叛 已經投效Sauron
他可能
1) 給Gandalf戒靈的假消息 害Gandalf被圍困在山上
戒靈留下狼或orc看守Gandalf後離開了
或者
2) 把Gandalf交給a giant Fangorn (Treebeard)監禁起來
後面主要是九戒靈攻擊夏爾時每一隻的動向
有提到他們沒有殺Ham是因為Sauron交代要把Baggins帶去Mordor
(Saruman是為了背叛而被創造的人物啊
Fangorn的用法似乎是在說種族 不過之前都是當地名在使用)
在這裡Gandalf到達Crickhollow時已經人去樓空
所以Ham和Black Rider在一起好幾天
當Gandalf在Bree時有Black Rider經過
Gandalf跟上去最後救了Ham 一起去 Weathertop
然後Tolkien開始考慮如果Gandalf和Trotter那麼早就知道戒靈的消息
他們怎麼會沒催Frodo早出發呢
於是安排Trotter有一段時間和Gandalf失聯 回來時已見Black Rider蹤跡
而Gandalf有寫信但沒有被送出去的劇情也誕生了
最後小說中的安排是讓Gandalf離開時還不知道戒靈出沒
由Radagast通知他
(很像Bilbo離開時還不知道戒指身份的安排)
然後決定Ham不能被抓 因為不可能不被殺掉
如果寫出Gandalf和Ham的去向又會過早暴露Gandalf要引走戒靈的企圖
這段Hamilcar/Odo橋段正式放棄了
後面又計畫讓Saramund/Saruman抓住Gandalf
精靈們送出消息說Gandalf不見了 Rivendell得到消息
Glorfindel被派出去 還通知了老鷹
老鷹們發現Gandalf並帶他去Rivendell
這麼一來Gandalf就不會經過Weathertop
柴火等等就變成是別的Ranger留下的東西
在Bree的章節幾乎都完成了
那封信的PS中寫了韻文 要Frodo問Trotter第一句後面怎麼接
但是Trotter仍然帶了一封寫有這些詩的信
(這次沒有提到Elendil後裔云云)
前一個版本的詩句：
All that is gold does not glitter,
all that is long does not last,
All that is old does not wither,
not all that is over is past.
現在的詩句：
All that is gold does not glitter,
not all those that wander are lost;
All that is old does not wither,
and pre may burn bright in the frost;
Not all that have fallen are vanquished,
not only the crowned is a king;
Let blade that was broken be brandished,
and Fire be the Doom of the Ring!
斷劍已經出來啦
另外 如果這真是Bilbo寫的 最後一句還真有氣勢哪
Tolkien又給Aragorn取了一堆其他名字
Elfstone/Erkenbrand/Elfstone/Ingold然後又回到Aragorn
中間還出現Aragorn son of Kelegorn, Elfstone son of Elfhelm的字眼
後面再修改後許多細節更貼近完稿
詩句又稍微有變化：
All that is gold does not glitter,
not all those that wander are lost;
All that is old does not wither,
and bright may be fire in the frost.
The pre that was low may be woken;
and sharp in the sheath is the sting;
Forged may be blade that was broken;
the crownless again may be king.
