至此 許多問題都算是解決了
Trotter的身分與家世背景、小hobbits的名字與數量
Bombadil確定不再與戒指打交道、Gandalf到底失蹤去幹什麼了
還剩下一個：遠征隊到底有誰？
Tolkien寫下了一頁筆記：
Elrond說他們無法為Frodo送出或召集大隊軍馬
他們必須送出訊息給所有自由民讓他們抵禦愈久愈好
使微小的希望能夠萌芽
但Frodo身邊也必須有幫手 且他們將代表所有自由種族
與九戒靈相對 Fellowship也是九人
另外 就是要幫助Minas Tirith
Galdor Legolas
這大概是Tolkien決定用Legolas取代Galdor的一瞬間
Christopher提到Legolas的名字"多年後再出現"
不過這可是我第一次看到啊
遠征隊裡他是最慢定名的一個
不過注釋中解釋了Legolas原先並不是為LR而想出來的
在The History of Middle-Earth第二冊中
Legolas Greenleaf是Gondolin 陷落時的一位精靈勇士 擁有比貓還銳利的夜眼
他屬於The House of Tree Galdor正是其領主
在第二冊中也提到
遠征隊員名字中Legolas是第一個出生的
第二個是Gimli 是The Tale of Tinuviel中一個精靈的名字
在Gondolin那個Legolas全名似乎是Legolas Greenleaf
Legolas引用Gnomish與Qenya “Keen-sight”的意思
(Gnome是Tolkien對高等精靈的舊稱 至少在LR定稿中沒有再使用)
LR中的神射手應該只叫Legolas Sindarin中的意義就是Greenleaf
LR中Legolas兩次被稱為Legolas Greenleaf
一次是Lady Galadriel 送來的訊息 (押韻比較漂亮) 另一次是Gandalf的呼喚
兩個都不是一般的稱呼方式
從取名來源不成熟看來 Legolas最後沒有進入精靈寶鑚也不奇怪了
Tolkien的遠征隊列表
1 Hobbits Frodo
2 Sam (promised)
3 Wizard Gandalf
4 Elf Legolas
5 Half-elf Erestor
因為會途經Minas Tirith 以下成員也會包括進去
6 Men Aragorn
7 Boromir
8 Dwarf Gimli son of Gloin
Merry與Pippin也堅持要去
如果Erestor不去才讓Pippin加入
Elrond提到也許Shire會需要他們
全部都走不太好
Pippin該回Shire嗎？
Tolkien一直猶豫要不要送一個hobbit回Shire
但最後還是決定讓Pippin換出Erestor
之後做了一些小幅度章節調整
除了某些為小細節之外已經和完成稿相去不遠
Elrond的雙生子還不存在所以提到他們的地方都附之闕如
Aragorn 的別稱有時還用Tarkil
Hobbits並沒有在Rivendell停留到兩個月 十一月底就出發了
(LR中是聖誕節啟程)
Radagast 住的地方Rhosgobel
Noldorin的rhosc = brown gobel = fenced homestead
所以Rhosgobel的意思基本上就是Radagast the Brown 的家
斷劍重鑄的情節加入 新名字取為Branding
Bilbo給Sting與鎖子甲時仍稱鎖子甲為elf-mail而非dwarf-mail
出發的描述很簡短 沒有Boromir吹號角 也沒有Sam檢查行李發現沒帶繩子
Khazad-dûm, the Dwarrowdelf
Tolkien在一封給出版商的信中說過dwarf的複數形應該是dwarrows
LR中Gandalf對於越過Misty Mountain後的路線一直都不肯明講
原稿中倒是很爽快的說了Lothlorien
甚至還對Merry說他可能取道Fangorn
之前的稿子上Aragorn建議走Moria Gandalf認為山路較好
這回兩人討論到後來說話順序亂掉
Tolkien大約在此時發現應該要讓Gandalf選Moria而Aragorn選山道
下山的敘述和前面差不多
雖然成員中多了Legolas和Gimli Aragorn也不再是hobbit
但是去探路的只有Boromir 抱hobbit下山則是Aragorn和Boromir一起
摔倒橋段還是有
先是Boromir摔倒 後面的Aragorn絆到他也跌下去
兩人手中的Merry和Pippin騰空飛起栽進雪中
後來下山的部份改寫 摔倒的部份就刪掉了
Legolas和Gandalf的玩笑話多了幾句：
'It is a pity,' said Legolas, 'that Gandalf cannot go before us
with a bright flame, and melt us a path.'
'It is a pity that Elves cannot fly over mountains, and fetch the
Sun to save them,' answered Gandalf. 'Even I need something to
work on. I cannot burn snow. But I could turn Legolas into a
flaming torch, if that will serve: he would burn bright while he
lasted.'
'Spare me!' cried Legolas. 'I fear that a dragon is concealed in
the shape of our wizard. Yet a tame dragon would be useful at
this hour.'
'It will be a wild dragon, if you say any more,' said Gandalf.
也許是這幾句提醒了Tolkien精靈可以在雪上行動無礙
才改寫成LR中的樣子
