       LOTHLORIEN  

       一開始  Lothlorien和The Mirror of Galadriel這兩章是合在一起的
       不過Christopher會分開介紹

       在劇情計畫中  Lothlorien裡並沒有安排Galadriel和Celeborn
       而且Boromir試圖奪取魔戒的地點在Blackroot和Anduin兩河之間的Angle
       Lothlorien的精靈原本住樹上  矮人引出山裡的邪惡後改為穴居
       和Mirkwood裡的精靈一樣

       原稿景色描寫比較簡單  好幾次東西方搞錯
       對話偶有多一句少一句  但是大意都差不多
       Mirror-mere那邊
       LR中Gimli只喊了Frodo一起去看  去的只有Gimli、Frodo、Sam
       原稿中Gimli雖只找了Frodo  但有說想去的都一起來
       於是除了Frodo主僕之外還多了Legolas

       原稿中Trotter只有遠遠指了Lothlorien的方向說我們天黑之前要到達
       LR裡是Legolas說的  還介紹了Lothlorien的美麗

       Frodo和Sam因傷落後
       原稿中本來都沒有描寫到Sam受傷的事  這裡是第一次
       另外  稿子中直接寫到Trotter轉回來關切
       但是Trotter當時無法做甚麼
       只能再走一程到小溪邊休息上藥  Frodo和Sam還踩到苔石滑倒了
       LR中安排Legolas先發現兩人落後再提醒Aragorn
       也許這邊落後比較多
       Aragorn讓其他人停下  帶著Boromir轉回來
       儘管仍然要等到溪邊才能敷藥  但Aragorn和Boromir會把兩人背過去

       原稿中Frodo雖不情願  還是自己解下外衣露出秘銀甲
       Gimli多說了一句"Bilbo救了你的命"
       Merry沒有插話說希望能告訴Bilbo
       LR裡面Frodo更加抗拒  結果是堅持上藥的Aragorn把衣服脫下來的
       Gimli對秘銀甲的評論也更多

       之前兩份版本沒相差非常多  原稿中少的不過是這裡一句那裏一句
       但是溪邊這一段所有景色描寫一概沒有
       其他燒水準備食物的敘述全無
       對傷口的解說也是極為簡短
       接下來的原稿就比較像流水筆記而非本文了
       對白都省略
       敘述他們進入Lothlorien
       在樹上躲過Orcs一夜之後才遇到Wood-elves
       再一起去到兩河交會的angle那邊Wood-elves的居處

       後面又忽然跳回剛進入Lothlorien時Frodo告訴Gimli有腳步聲的地方
       文字完整地和LR只有幾個用字有差異
       Christopher說
       Tolkien大約在寫到Frodo與Sam落後時開始另外謄一份fair copy
       然後在趕上進度時用鉛筆繼續寫下進入Lothlorien的劇情
       寫到Frodo和Gimli對話結束  Legolas歎息現在Lothlorien是冬天為止
       然後擦掉鉛筆筆跡用墨水重寫在原來的地方(或是不擦直接覆寫)
       寫完後再回到舊原稿這裡繼續下去
       以後這種先寫鉛筆再用墨水蓋過去的寫法會很常用

       此時Aragorn和Arwen與Lothlorien的因緣還沒有建立
       所以Gimli那句"如果精靈還存在"的話最初是Aragorn說的
       沒錯  就是Aragorn
       終於在原稿中是以這個名字登場而不是Trotter
       Gandalf會用這個名字叫他
       其他會用到時就是強調出身的Aragorn son of XXX
       原稿中敘述他做了甚麼時總是用Trotter
       但是Lothlorien這一章裡面先是Aragorn對Gandalf道別時用了一次
       這裡又用了一次  後面一段也都這樣用
       不知道Strider甚麼時候會出現呢

       Legolas提到"Angle"時說了：
       Angle, Bennas between Blackroot and Anduin
       Bennas  字根Ben是Noldorin裡面corner, angle的意思
       nass則有point, angle的意思

       Galadriel的設定當然也還沒有出現
       所以Boromir和Aragorn之間關於另尋路途和危險森林的對話也就沒有了

       小溪Nimrodel的名字：
       Taiglin/Linglor→Linglorel/Nimladel→Nimlorel→Nimrodel
       (Tanglin是第一紀元Beleriand河流Sirion的支流)
       Legolas的Amroth之歌中女主角名字
       Inglorel→Linglorel→Nimladel→Nimlorel→Nimlothel→Nimrodel
       差不多到hobbits在樹上睡覺時  Nimrodel這個名字就正式定下來了
       男主角Ammalas→Amaldor→Amroth
       提到這首歌是翻譯過來的時候  Common Speech(通用語)這個名詞第一次出現
       LR這個段落中用的是Common Speech的正式名稱Westron Speech

       歌詞前六段幾乎和LR一樣(除了名字是Nimlothel)
       說到灰色港灣的精靈船在等她
       (LR裡Lothlorien的精靈不是從灰港啟航  而是Anduin河口的Belfalas
       但是這個設定後面才確立  港灣是哪個港灣也就不知道了)
       接下來：
       A wind awoke in Northern lands
       and loud it blew and free,
       and bore the ship from Elven-strands
       across the shining sea.

       Beyond the waves the shores were grey,
       the mountains sinking low;
       as salt as tears the driving spray
       the wind a cry of woe.

       When Amroth saw the fading shore
       beyond the heaving swell
       he cursed the faithless. ship that bore
       him far from Nimlothel.

       An Elven-lord he was of old
       before the birth of men
       when first the boughs were hung with gold
       in fair Lothlorien.
       (這一段另一個版本：
       An Elven-lord he was of old
       when all the woods were young
       and in Lothlorien with gold
       the boughs of trees were hung.)
       
       之後第11和13段和FR是一樣的
       第12段如下：
       The foam was in his flowing hair,
       a light about him shone;
       afar they saw the waves him bear
       as floats the northern swan.

       LR版本：
       An Elven-maid there was of old,
       A shining star by day:
       Her mantle white was hemmed with gold,
       Her shoes of silver-grey.

       A star was bound upon her brows,
       A light was on her hair
       As sun upon the golden boughs
       In Lórien the fair.

       Her hair was long, her limbs were white,
       And fair she was and free;
       And in the wind she went as light
       As leaf of linden-tree.

       Beside the falls of Nimrodel,
       By water clear and cool,
       Her voice as falling silver fell
       Into the shining pool.

       Where now she wanders none can tell,
       In sunlight or in shade;
       For lost of yore was Nimrodel
       And in the mountains strayed.

       The elven-ship in haven grey
       Beneath the mountain-lee
       Awaited her for many a day
       Beside the roaring sea.

       A wind by night in Northern lands
       Arose, and loud it cried,
       And drove the ship from elven-strands
       Across the streaming tide.

       When dawn came dim the land was lost,
       The mountains sinking grey
       Beyond the heaving waves that tossed
       Their plumes of blinding spray.

       Amroth beheld the fading shore
       Now low beyond the swell,
       And cursed the faithless ship that bore
       Him far from Nimrodel.

       Of old he was an Elven-king,
       A lord of tree and glen,
       When golden were the boughs in spring
       In fair Lothlórien.

       From helm to sea they saw him leap,
       As arrow from the string,
       And dive into the water deep,
       As mew upon the wing.

       The wind was in his flowing hair,
       The foam about him shone;
       Afar they saw him strong and fair
       Go riding like a swan.

       But from the West has come no word,
       And on the Hither Shore
       No tidings Elven-folk have heard
       Of Amroth evermore.

       Tolkien又開始了筆記：
       不一樣的有幾個小地方
       Legolas描述Galadrim的屋子[→Galadhrim(The Tree People)]
       Frodo看到Gollum想爬上樹
       精靈搭上箭時被Frodo阻止了
       危機感很強的Gollum逃走
       LR中是Frodo看到Gollum爬樹又逃走
       Haldir上來後才知道Gollum逃跑是因為Haldir靠近碰到樹幹

       完整的敘述從Legolas唱完歌開始
       關於Amroth跳海的部分原稿中Legolas有說
       LR大概是因為歌詞中都寫了就不重複了
       倒是多了風會帶著兩人的聲音沿著河流迴盪的片段
       出現好幾次的名字Aragorn被註記要改成Elfstone

       Legolas爬樹時被Haldir擋下
       Daro = stop, halt

       另一個比較早的版本的描述：
       一行人找到一群很高的樹
       最低的枝幹連Boromir也搆不到
       但他們帶著繩子
       一端拋上樹枝後Legolas就上去探路
       說接近頂端的樹冠中有地方可以歇息
       但是他在鄰近的樹上看到平台
       也許精靈們仍然會來
       此時上方才傳來精靈語
       而Frodo聽不懂精靈對話的原因在這裡是因為東方精靈的語言比較古老
       不像山脈以西的精靈用common speech
       (其他版本以及LR中只有說東西方精靈的語言不太一樣所以聽不懂
       並沒有說比較古老
       而且這裡common speech的意思顯然和LR的設定衝突  是西方精靈通用語)

       剛開始精靈是要求他們三人一群分別上不同的樹
       很快改成LR那樣要Frodo與Legolas先上去  其他人在下面等

       Haldir的名字：Hathaldir
       兄弟Rúmil and Orophinl：
       Orfin→Orofin
       Rhimbron→Romrin→Rhomrin
       Hathaldir說他們從來沒聽說過或看過hobbits
       (但後面又提到傳言北方過了半身人的領地仍有安全的港灣)
       LR中說他們很久沒有hobbits, or halflings的消息了
       也不知道hobbits是否仍然存在於中土世界

       還有一個版本是三人都不會西方語的Rhimbron, Rhimlath→Rhimdir, and Haldir
       當Haldir名字確定後
       Hathaldir變成第一紀元中Beren父親Barahir的同伴

       原稿中當Hathaldir問起他們有多少人
       Legolas不但直接就把矮人列出來  Gandalf的殞落也一起說了
       旁邊加上註記要把Gandalf的消息延後告知
       Hathaldir拒絕讓矮人通過時
       Frodo辯解說Gimli是Elrond也熟知的精靈之友(elf-friend)
       LR裡則是說他是孤山的Dáin的族人  與Elrond交好
       (若真是"Elrond也熟知的精靈之友"  表示是別的精靈讓他成為elf-friend
       以當時的種族背景不太可能找到比Elrond對矮人更友善的精靈了
       矮人們也不會主動去結交一堆精靈
       再說遠征隊裡以elf-friend的身份被介紹的  LR中只有Aragorn
       Gimli和他並列的話很奇怪)

       另外  Merry告訴Frodo其他行李被Aragorn藏起來時
       他是直呼Aragorn這個名諱
       印象中LR裡Sam, Merry, Pippin一般是稱呼他Strider
       但這裡並沒有用到Tolkien一直沒有戒掉的Trotter
       精靈的平台在原稿中似乎是沒有入口開洞的
       要從邊緣爬上去

       Pippin在睡前說的
       I hope, if I do go to sleep in this bed-loft, that I shan't roll off.
       其實在原稿中是bird-loft
       似乎是別人做的打字稿中打錯了  就一直留存到出版

       寫到Gollum接近的段落
       Tolkien原本讓Hathaldir先上樹彎弓瞄準  然後Frodo才往下看
       但馬上改成等Gollum走了Hathaldir才回來
       雖然筆記裡寫了Frodo阻止精靈射箭甚麼的
       Hathaldir回來後還是說不知名生物在他碰到樹幹時跑掉了

       需要架繩橋的河流Morthond  與Blackroot同是Silverlode備用名稱
       原先  三個精靈裡Orfin在前一晚orc經過時先回去報信
       早上Tolkien就讓Hathaldir領路  Rhimbron留守平台
       現在發現需要有人在那邊收繩子
       就讓Rhimbron同行到河流為止

       看到Hathaldir示範的單繩過橋
       Legolas在LR中說他可以這樣走  其他人卻不行
       原稿裡Legolas說他也必須很小心  因為Mirkwood裡沒有這項技藝

       渡河過程LR比較簡略
       只說Pippin敏捷快速且單手扶繩  但是眼睛盯著對岸不敢往下看
       Sam手握得死緊慢慢挪動  還畏懼地看下面的流水
       原稿中說Aragorn緩慢先行
       Pippin輕盈快速只扶單手
       Merry想跟他較勁卻滑了一下吊在水上
       Sam跟在Frodo後面慢慢挪動  畏懼地看下面的流水
       Gimli和Boromir押隊
       (Legolas呢？)

       過河後來到Blackroot(Silverlode)和Anduin之間的angle
       LR：the Naith of Lórien or the Gore
       原稿：the Gore, Nelen we call it.
       Gore：三角形地帶(英文)  Nel-：three
       更早寫成Nelennas  nass = point, angle
       後來Nelennas用來稱呼城市Caras Galadon
       還有一個版本說：
       Narthas or the Gore as you would say, for it is the land that lies
       like a spear-head
       這是說gore = Old English的gara = an angular point of land
       Gara 又和gar相關  意思是spear

       原稿中Pippin告訴Haldir精靈港灣在Shire旁邊
       Haldir很有興趣  但Pippin沒去過因此無法形容給他
       LR中這是Merry的戲份

       大約在這時候
       Tolkien決定Blackroot和Silverlode調換名稱
       讓Blackroot變成更南邊的一條河
       Silverlode從最早的Redway→Blackroot/Morthond最終成為Silverlode
       矮人名字Buzundush→Kibilnala  精靈稱呼它為Celebrind/Celebrath
       LR中它的精靈名是Celebrant
       Rant- = lode, vein

       LR裡大家蒙眼過了一日夜之後遇到往北方防守的部隊
       他們帶來之前的orcs都已殲滅的消息  以及目擊到不明生物的報告
       由Haldir轉告大家
       原稿中沒有過夜  消息是Legolas翻譯的
       還有一個小小的橋段沒有放進來：
       'What is this?' said one of the Elves, looking in wonder at Legolas.
       'By his raiment of green and brown [?he is an] Elf of the North.
       Since when have we taken our kindred prisoner, Hathaldir? '
       'I am not a prisoner,' said Legolas. 'I am only showing the dwarf
       how to walk straight without the help of eyes.'


       後面的劇情計畫很簡略和破碎
       所以只有大約介紹一下：

       描述Cerin Amroth 和a green snowdrop  精靈文nifred/nifredil
       根據字根表中所列
       nifred = pallor, fear  nifredil = snowdrop
       同時nieninqe 'white tear' = snowdrop
       Cerin Amroth上的白花後來就叫niphredil

       一度讓Hathaldir在Cerin Amroth問起第九人(Gandalf)的下落
       從一見面就說推遲到這裡  最後才決定要等到城市裡

       終於出現Lothlorien的統治者
       這時沒有名字  只有Lord and Lady  和white council有關
       白衣白髮  眼神銳利如同星光化成的長槍

       遠征隊離開Lothlorien後  在Stonehills分開

       故事敘述又從解下眼罩開始
       Cerin Amroth舊名Coron Amroth/Kerin Amroth
       Coron和Cerin都是Noldorin(諾多精靈文)
       Cerin又等於Quenya的Korin = circular enclosure
       但另一方面Cerin Amroth = mound of Amroth
       Tolkien後來把它翻譯成circular mound or artificial hill

       黃花elanor  有考慮另一個名字yri
       白花niphredil  這時候叫nifredil

       爬上Cerin Amroth時Frodo眺望Anduin並看到Dol Dugol
       Dol Dugol→Dol Dughul也就是後來的Dol Guldur
       是Sauron化名Necromancer時代在Mirkwood南方的據點
       雖然這是The Hobbits時的事情
       The Hobbits裡一次都沒有具體說到這個地名
       一直都是Necromancer的地牢什麼的

       這時候的Aragorn是第一次來Lothlorien
       他在山丘下的回憶自然就沒有出現了
       Aragorn的名字變化非常混亂  Tolkien寫得很快所以改不完全
       Aragorn→Ingold  Elfstone→Ingold
       Ingold→Elfstone

       最後  Christopher提到有一些鉛筆寫的注記：
       ─Balrog能不能是Saruman？讓Gandalf和Saruman在橋上戰鬥？
         然後Gandalf……披上白袍
       ─如果Galadriel只有一個人而且是Elrond的妻子？
       ─Elf-rings……如果One-Ring毀了，Elf-rings的力量也將失去
       這些文字被劃掉了  有些完全沒有採用
       有些蛛絲馬跡仍然在之後的情節中找得到
