World No. 1 Roger Federer has been named Champion of Champions by the writers
of French sports paper L'Equipe. Federer is the first tennis player to win the
award since Andre Agassi in 1999.
"I am very proud, especially if you look at the previous winners. [Biker
Valentino] Rossi and [Formula 1 driver Fernando] Alonso had an incredible
season too. The three of us, we had a very good year, I was elected, and it's
just great. Last year I was close but [Moroccan track-and-field star] Hicham
El-Guerrouj deserved it more than me because it was an Olympic year. I'm not
going to say 'me at last', but it does feel really good."
Federer, who begins his 2006 campaign in Doha this week, captured 11 titles
last year including Wimbledon, the US Open and four ATP Masters Series shields
before going on to finish No. 1 for the second consecutive season.
