Roger Federer moved to within reach of his sixth title of 2003, and improved
his excellent indoors record to 16-1 for the season, when he defeated Max Mirnyi
6-2, 7-6(2) in one hour and 14 minutes to advance to his second straight final
of the CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna. The Swiss got off to a 3-0 lead in the first
set and secured the set with a second break when being 5-2 up. Federer didn’t
face a single break point all match and lost only nine points on his own serve
. He rushed to a 5-0 lead in the second set tie-break and never let the
Belarussian back into the match.
The Wimbledon champion holds an ATP-best 66-14 record on the season and remains
locked in a three-way battle with Andy Roddick and Juan Carlos Ferrero for the
year-end No. 1 position in the ATP Champions Race. That battle will likely be
decided at Tennis Masters Cup Houston.
In the second semifinal second seed Carlos Moya defeated the 2000 Vienna
champion Tim Henman 7-6(1) 7-5 in a close match over one hour and 41 minutes.
Henman looked in control and had the upper hand in both sets. The Brit had two
set points on Moya’s serve at 6-5 in the first set and was serving for the
second set at 5-4. But Moya was playing brilliant on the big points and closed
out the match winning the last four games of the match.
The Spaniard is looking for his fourth title of the season and is also the
highest-ranked player in the ATP Champions Race yet to qualify for Houston. He
could move 78 points clear in the 2003 ATP Champions Race of eighth-placed
David Nalbandian by winning the title. Should he lose the gap on Nalbandian
will be 63 points.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Federer: “I’m very happy about my game, I played controlled. I started off
great, taking a 3-0 lead. I always felt in control. But you’re never in
control against ‘the Beast’. I really had to concentrate and make a lot of
first serves.”
“I played well against Max the last few times and it definitely a good step go
ing into the final. It will be a totally different match tomorrow. I’m happy
to be back in a final. My first priority is to defend my title here. I’ve
never been able to defend a title.”
About this year
“It’s definitely the best year of my career.”
Moya: “I have to say I was very lucky, he had so many chances in both the
first and second set. I played very well, I’m feeling confident. The surface
suits me very well.”
“It’s a very good win for me. I don’t like his game, he’s very tricky and
very smart on court. I tried to keep him at the baseline and to attack a lot.”
About his chances to reach the Tennis Masters Cup
“Hopefully this is going to help me a lot to get into the Tennis Masters Cup.
If I can win tomorrow it will be a huge step towards Houston. I’ll also try to
win my first indoor title.”
“It’s not easy not to think about it. I’ll try to forget on court but it’s
always in my mind.”
About the final
“Once you get to the final anything can happen. It will be very tough, he
mixes the game very well. He’s a very complete player. It’s going to be an
interesting match. I look forward to it.”
“Last year he played unbelievable against me. Hopefully it will be different
tomorrow.”
Henman: “I feel disappointed to have lost the match, I probably should have
won today. I can’t have too many complaints. I played ok and I was pretty
close to winning it.”
“I played the right way and I’ll try to build on this next week.”
