本事
Considered to be the finest film of French director Robert Bresson's career,
Diary of a Country Priest is an outwardly downbeat but ultimately
inspirational tale of great subtlety and sincerity. Bresson personally adapted
the plot from a novel by Berano and carefully extracted the dialogue
word-for-word from the original text. To add further realism he used
non-professional actors with a genuine love of God. His lead actor then spent
time in a monastery to prepare for the role and during filming wore the actual
clothing of the priests therein. The story centers on an idealistic, deeply
devout young priest who goes straight from seminary into a country parish and
finds himself utterly unprepared to deal with the congregation's very human
problems. Unfortunately, he is a sickly fellow and his vow of poverty does
little to help his chronic condition. He soon discovers that he has chosen a
thankless profession and that most of his parishioners could care less whether
he is there or not. Still he persists and even manages to help a bitter
countess make peace with God. Not long afterward he is diagnosed with stomach
cancer and is forced to make his own private peace before he dies.
