1789年，法國大革命開始，國會開始研究新的刑法。當時其中一位本職是醫生的議員
Joseph-Ignace Guillotin(吉樂汀）提出六點有關建議，認為死刑應以快速及人道的方式
執行，而且應對所有人施同一刑罰以提倡平等。他的選擇是斬首。值得留意的是，
Guillotin本人是反對死刑的。

1791年，法國國會通過以斬首作為唯一合法的死刑執行方式。

1792年，由Guillotin醫生與一位法國劊子手亨利·夏爾一同合作，又透過一位德國工匠
托皮亞斯·施密特動手製造了一台原型機，從此新型斷頭台便正式面世，並以他的姓氏命
名。這種斷頭台參考的是劍的設計。它的刀刃本是與地面平行的，但是在測試中發現有實
用上的困難，例如因為受到實體橫切面的阻力而無法順利截斷實體，或者因為阻力而產生
刃部翻捲或缺口，因此設計者又從大鐮刀的形狀與功能還有成效而得到靈感，而在正式使
用前改成斜刃（很諷刺的是據說提供大鐮刀看法的正是路易十六本人[1]）。同年4月，斷
頭台進行了第一次處決。受刑者是一名強盜。

1793年1月，法王路易十六被送上斷頭台處死，同年10月他的王后瑪麗·安東尼特也被斷
頭台處決；至1794年為止三年內，斷頭台斬首反革命份子保守估算超過60,000人。

斷頭台在拿破崙時代傳入德國，到納粹時期仍有使用，主要是對付判死刑的罪犯。若對付
政敵則多用毒氣、絞殺、槍殺，例外者為白玫瑰為首成員6人，包括蕭爾兄妹，1943年2月
22日受審後數小時遭受斷頭台處死。

Guillotin醫生在1814年因肩膀生疽而過世，非如傳說中的死在源於其姓氏的斷頭台。他
的後人更改了自己的姓氏，以免和斷頭台扯上關係。
