ARGUMENT

43 'Thirteen years ago, researchers studied a group of 25 infants who showed
signs of mild distress when exposed to unfamiliar stimuli such as an unusual
odor or a tape recording of an unknown voice. They discovered that these
infants were more likely than other infants to have been conceived in early
autumn, a time when their mothers' production of melatonin—a hormone known
to affect some brain functions—would naturally increase in response to
decreased daylight. In a follow-up study conducted earlier this year, more
than half of these children—now teenagers—who had shown signs of distress
identified themselves as shy. Clearly, increased levels of melatonin before
birth cause shyness during infancy and this shyness continues into later life.

   Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help
   bring about a better society.

   今日教育兒童如何過社會生活，將決定社會未來的命運，不幸的，我們還沒有學會
   如何教育扶養兒童，這些兒童將進一步改進社會。

2. Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work
   makes a contribution to the larger society, It is more important that
   they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic
   those interests may seem.

   學者不應擔心他們的工作是否對社會有貢獻，最重要的是，他們要追求個人興趣，
   不管這些興趣是多麼的古怪。

[arguement]

35. The following appeard as an editorial in a wildelife journal

　　"arctic deer live on islands in canada's arctic region. they search for
food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of a year.
their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which
they feed, and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover
the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it.
unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations
are declining. since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends
that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the decline in
arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their
age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea."

Argument

The following appeared as part of a memo from the manager of an automobile
 manufacturing company.
"Because the demand for our automobiles is expected to increase dramatically,
we need to open a new manufacturing plant as soon as possible in order to
continue to thrive. Our marketing projections indicate that 80 million people
will want to buy our automobiles, yet our existing plant can only produce 40
million automobiles. The new plant can be opened on a part-time basis, with
workers from our existing site rotating responsibilities, until an operational
staff can be trained. A major airplane manufacturer was extremely successful
using this part-time rotating strategy when it opened its new plant five years
ago."

The following appeared in a memo from the manager of television station KICK.

"A nationwide survey reveals that a sizeable majority of men would like to
see additional sports programs on television. After television station
WACK increased its sports broadcasts, its share of the television audience
in its viewing area almost doubled. To gain a larger audience share in our
area, and thus increase company profits, KICK should also revise its
broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage."

ISSUE:

38"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most

233"The true value of a civilization is reflected in its artistic creations
rather than in its scientific accomplishments."

Argument:

The vice president for human resources at Climpson Industries sent the
following recommendation to the company's president. "In an effort to improve
our employees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring of
employees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the
Internet from their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are
to reduce the number of work hours spent on personal or recreational
activities, such as shopping or playing games. By installing software to
detect employees' Internet use on company computers, we can prevent employees
from wasting time, foster a better work ethic at Climpson, and improve our
overall profits."

今天的情況有點混亂，報到的時候工作人員說我的名字在名單是打錯的
他們說我報名的時候少打名字的最後一個字! 我完全沒有印象啊
然後說他們會幫我寫報告，但這樣ET$有可能覺得是兩個不同的人
不會承認我的成績!!!!!!(大哭)

進去之前核對資料，竟然生日都是錯的，三月打成五月
個人的確是平常有點小迷糊，但還不至於連自己幾月生都忘記了
我覺得這也太離譜了吧  >"<  但是身分證字號、地址、電話都是正確的
我真的是滿肚子狐疑啊!!都怪我當初沒有好好的檢查......

在拍照的時候我詢問什麼時候會知道承不承認與否
他們說要等到考完筆考了，我的成績要是有出來就會算分
天哪，要是到時候不算分，我該如何是好呢? ~>_<~
還是我現在就應該寫信去詢問呢......

有沒有人碰過一樣的情況呢? 正在很著急當中......

Argument

10. The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island
    Gazette.
    "The population of Balmer Island increases to 100,000 during the summer
    months. To reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrains,
    the town council of Balmer Island should limit the number of mopeds
    rented by each of the island's six moped and bicycle rental companies
    from 50 per day to 30 per day during the summer season. By limiting the
    number of rentals, the town council is sure to attain the 50 percent
    reduction in moped accidents that was achieved last year in the
    neighboring island of Torseau, when Toreau's town council enforced similar
    limits on moped rentals."

argument:

As people grow older, an enzyme known as PEP increasingly breaks down the
neuropeptide chemicals involved in learning and memory. But now, researchers
have found compounds that prevent PEP from breaking neuropeptides apart. In
tests, these compounds almost completely restored lost memory in rats. The
use of these compounds should be extended to students who have poor memory
and difficulty in concentrating-and therefore serious problems in school
performance. Science finally has a solution for problems neither parents nor
teachers could solve.
