In search of a pitcher and his dreams
Lost: One pitcher.
I've been intrigued by this mystery for barely a month now, but it's been an un
solved case much longer.
One evening earlier this season, Geraldo Padua came in to pitch at Harrisburg f
or the Double-A Altoona Curve. Leading 2-1 in the eighth inning, Padua allowed
a game-tying home run. The next pitch was another homer. The following pitch a
third homer. Stranger things have happened in minor league games than homers on
three consecutive pitches, but there was something familiar about this seeming
ly nondescript reliever.
Indeed. A little research reminded me that he's been a wanted man, by Altoona's
parent team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, when they traded Al Martin to San Diego p
rior to last season. Before that, the Padres showed interest when they sent Jim
Leyritz to the Yankees in 1999. Both teams wanted him as part of those deals.
And why not?
In May of '99, Padua's record as a minor leaguer was 20-0, eight wins with the
Yankees' Gulf Coast League team in 1997, eight more the next year at Oneonta of
the short-season New York-Penn League, and his first four decisions of '99 for
Greensboro of the South Atlantic League. He lost his next start, stopping one
short of the unofficial minor league record for consecutive victories.
Here he was, not two years later, pitching out of the bullpen in Double-A with
an earned run average of 9.00. It was his second shot at Double-A. The first on
e ended last season during a run of 14 consecutive losses, the final six after
a demotion back to Class A.
What could have gone so wrong?
One former teammate in the Yankees' system, who didn't want his name used, said
Padua "was a great guy but definitely weird" but admitted he couldn't pinpoint
a firm reason for that assessment. Another ex-teammate added that the American
players weren't sure how to read him but chalked that up to the language barri
er. But they decided to call him Doc, short for Witch Doctor, probably as much
for an unusual high hairstyle as anything else.
Unfairly labeled as different? It's not unusual for a Hispanic player who speak
s little or no English. As an executive in one of Padua's three organizations s
aid, "I've heard there might be some questions about his makeup. But you have t
o be careful. That (comment) pops up sometimes with Latin players."
"He never really entered into the normal hijinks," said Bill Hass, who covered
Padua for the Greensboro News & Record. "I remember him being very businesslike
. He was respected for the way he went about his business."
Padua was married by then, though his wife was back in the Dominican Republic,
the home he left to become a baseball star. "I made the decision when I dropped
out (of high school) that this is my profession," Padua said during the long w
inning streak. He quit school at age 14 and got a job so he could buy his first
baseball shoes and a glove. Signed by the Yankees two years later, the plan se
emed to be working.
"He had all three pitches, a fastball, curve and change," said current Ottawa L
ynx manager Stan Hough, who had Padua at the height of his success as a 22-year
-old in Greensboro. "The fastball was around 90 (mph) but it was too straight s
ometimes. He needed to learn the two-seamer. At times, he was just throwing the
ball. He needed to be a little more deliberate. But his maturity level was OK.
"
All in all, a common assessment of a Class A prospect. "He was a good kid," Hou
gh said. "If you see him, tell him I said, 'Hi,' and wanted to know if he's doi
ng OK."
I did just that, approaching Padua before a game. But he waved me off, saying,
"Me? No, no. No English." I knew that wasn't completely true, so I tried my one
possible opening. "Stan Hough wanted me to say hello to you," I said. "He want
s to know if you're doing OK."
Padua pondered that for a moment. "Hello to Stan," he said. "I'm doing fine." A
nd walked away.
If he was, it certainly didn't show on the mound. In fact, the Pirates' organiz
ation released him shortly afterward. The numbers for this season: 0-1, 9.69 ER
A in 13 innings over 10 appearances.
"He's wild in the (strike) zone," said Paul Tinnell, Pittsburgh's player develo
pment director. "He'll throw you a first-pitch strike, but a pitcher who doesn'
t have command with the fastball, it's going to blow up in his face sooner or l
ater."
That jibes with observations from coaches and teammates that Padua began to rel
y too much on his changeup.
"He was throwing in the winter with good success," Tinnell said of Padua's seco
nd-best ERA (1.42) in last winter's Dominican League playoffs. "He's probably g
oing to turn up somewhere."
It might be any time now and it probably will be in the Yankees' Florida traini
ng complex, thinks Myles Kahn, who also thinks he's still Padua's agent. But he
's not sure of either.
"There's another guy who says he represents Geraldo now," Kahn said. "I heard h
e's going to sign with the Yankees again but he didn't do it through me. I call
ed the hotel in Tampa where the Yankees' minor leaguers stay and he's not there
. I tried his wife ... and his ex-wife but couldn't find out where he is."
Kahn hasn't been able to determine if Padua is in the USA or even if he had lef
t. Foreign players are in the country through visas obtained by the team. When
they lose their roster status, they lose their visas. Standard procedure is for
the minor league team's trainer to take the player to the airport with a ticke
t that can't be changed. But because there are no direct flights from, say, Alt
oona to Santo Domingo, a kernel of uncertainty remains.
"We're not immigration guys," Tinnell said. "You can't handcuff the player and
take him out of the country."
Indeed, many players find ways to go to New York rather than their homeland, ho
ping to blend into the large Dominican community there and find jobs. "You have
to understand," Kahn said. "Baseball is king in the Dominican. If they go back
, they're afraid they'll be labeled a failure. Their only option probably is wo
rking in the fields."
Padua might very well pop up in the minor leagues again. Or we might never hear
of him again.
For the baseball world, Geraldo Padua is lost — at least for now. Maybe he's j
ust another guy who hit the wall at Double-A. But you can't help but wonder how
much more of a dream is lost. And what more could have been done to avoid it.
Geraldo, Stan Hough wants to know if you're doing OK. I don't even know you. Bu
t I'd like to know, too.
