Love is the Pitts http://www.canoe.ca/JamMoviesArtistsP/paltrow_gwyneth.html August 1, 1996 By LOUIS B. HOBSON Calgary Sun BEVERLY HILLS -- Matchmaker, matchmaker what a match you made. You took Hollywood's hottest hunk, Brad Pitt, and paired him up with a blonde haired beauty, Gwyneth Paltrow, who's being hyped as the industry's most promising new star. For most of Pitt's millions of fans, Paltrow is just that girl on Pitt's arm. But Paltrow is coming into her own. On Aug. 9 she opens as the heroine of Emma, the latest Jane Austen novel to become a celluloid extravaganza. She has also completed filming Hard Eight and Kilronan. She's currently in Florida on the set of a modern-day Great Expectations with Robert DeNiro, Anne Bancroft and Ethan Hawke. "Everybody wants Gwyenth in their movie these days. She's positively luminous and she is an extraordinary actress for one so young," says Douglas McGrath who directed her in Emma. Paltrow says the only reason she would welcome any degree of celebrity is "to be considered something other than Brad Pitt's girlfriend. "That's been my off-screen role for two years now. Instead, of tapering off, things are getting even nuttier. "We need bodyguards for crowd control because these female fans will try anything to brush up against Brad. "It's not that I'm jealous. It's just that it's so unfair to him." In Emma, Paltrow plays a woman who meddles in the love affairs of others while shunning love and marriage herself. Many have accused her of shying away from marriage but these days she's sporting a gold and diamond band on her right hand. Paltrow, 23, refuses to say even if the ring is a gift from Pitt, 32, let alone an engagement ring. "Brad and I have certainly talked about marriage mostly because we both love children and want children of our own. "But marriage is something we both take seriously. We both come from very secure families. That's the kind of lasting marriage we'd want for ourselves." They share Pitt's Hollywood home and an apartment in New York. "When we're at home, I like to cook. Stuffed chicken is my specialty. When we're in Hollywood, Brad does all the driving because that's his city. When we're in New York, I do the driving." Paltrow is the daughter of actress Blythe (Prince Of Tides) Danner and TV producer Bruce (St. Elsewhere) Paltrow. Steven Spielberg has been a friend of Paltrow's parents for years as has designer Calvin Klein. "I love Calvin and I love his clothes but I could never muster up the courage it takes to be a runway model," says Paltrow. This particular day when she's meeting with journalists to discuss Emma, Paltrow says her wardrobe consists of "a Gucci shirt, a K-Mart skirt and DKNY sandals. It was 8 a.m. on a Sunday after Brad had just flown in for the weekend. I grabbed the nearest things at hand and walked out the door." Paltrow says she and Pitt "cannot bear to be away from each other for more than a couple of weeks at a time. The longest we've been parted since we became a couple is 28 days."
