LOS ANGELES: Two people who claim that Gwyneth Paltrow
caused them "permanent and serious" back and neck
injuries when her rental car collided with their
vehicle one year ago sued the Oscar-winning actress on
Monday.
Veronica Cabello and Jorge Arauz said in their Los
Angeles Superior Court civil lawsuit that the star of
"Shakespeare in Love" ran into them on a West Hollywood
street on April 24, 1999.
Paltrow's publicist, Stephen Huvane, referred calls
about the lawsuit to the actress's lawyer, Harold Brown.
Brown could not immediately be reached for comment.
"They were stopped and she rear-ended them," said James
Earle, who represents the plaintiffs. "They suffered
$4,000 in damages to the car and $8,000 in medical
damages." Earle said the plaintiffs also would seek
"pain and suffering" damages from the 26-year-old
willowy blond actress, who won international stardom by
playing the title role in the 1996 film adaptation of
Jane Austen's "Emma."
Also named in the lawsuit is Midway Rent-a-Car, which
owned the vehicle Paltrow was driving at the time of
the accident. Earle said he has been trying to settle
the case with Paltrow and her insurance company.
Paltrow, the daughter of television producer Bruce
Paltrow and Tony-award winning actress Blythe Danner,
last appeared on the big screen in 1999's critically
acclaimed "The Talented Mr. Ripley." (Reuters)
