Gwyneth Gets Ugly for Farrelly Brothers

Gwyneth Paltrow, dog girl?
That doesn't have much of a convincing ring, but the Farrelly brothers
seem to think the svelte blond actress can de-beautify herself for the
role of the ugly duckling in their next directorial effort, Shallow
Hal. After much consideration (perhaps she, too, hesitated before
dumping herself into the danger zone of ugliness), Gwynnie has finally
signed on the dotted line, Entertainment Tonight reports.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly are, of course, the princes of obnoxious
humor. Their movies (such as Me, Myself, & Irene and Dumb & Dumber)
plow through bathroom and bedroom doors, finding funnies in the
deepest, crudest depths.
But where does Gwyneth, the graceful swan who's tackled Shakespeare
and the Academy Awards with equal poise, fit into a movie by the lewd
boys of Hollywood? Perhaps she wants to bust out of her nicey-nice mode
and poke some fun at herself, like Cameron Diaz did in There's Something
About Mary in 1998. Or maybe she'll attempt what Diaz achieved in Being
John Malkovich, in which she nailed greatness as a dumpy pet store owner
with a fondness for sweatpants.
Either way, this is gonna be interesting. Shallow Hal is the story of a
young man who promises his dying father he will only date beautiful
women. Hal (portrayed by goofball Jack Black) fulfills the wish until he
meets his dream girl (Paltrow), whose surface beauty is somewhat
comparable to Janet Reno's.
Hal is due in theaters in summer 2002. Peter Farrelly originally wanted
to begin production in November 1999, but he told Variety last August
that his wife's impending birth would put the project on hiatus.
