Gwyneth Paltrow's pretty much got it all. She's a natural blonde
and a chic cover girl, she has a phenomenal wardrobe and she's
even won an Academy Award.
Now, she's officially a recording artist.
Look out, Jennifer Lopez.
Paltrow has cut three songs for the soundtrack of her next movie,
Duets, in which she plays an amateur singer competing in a
national karaoke contest. (Her father, Bruce, wrote and directed
the film.)
Beginning Monday, her rendition of the Smokey Robinson hit
"Cruisin'," which she sings with '80s relic and Duets costar Huey
Lewis, is being released to radio stations around the nation.
Though she has never taken a voice lesson in her life, Paltrow
says she's been singing duets with her mother, actress Blythe
Danner, since childhood.
"My mother and I would always sing and harmonize together,"
Paltrow tells USA Today. "I was like 3 years old, imitating her
jazz-singer way. I was singing that Sesame Street song 'One of
these things does not belong,' but I put this jazzy spin on it.
It was hilarious."
Like, how funny.
"Gwyneth is as authentic a talent as you can find, musically
speaking," Dick Rudolph, the music supervisor on Duets, tells
the newspaper. "The way she phrases stuff, the girl's got it."
The 27-year-old "It" girl reportedly does a sultry rendition of
"Cruisin'", the Temptations classic "Just My Imagination" (with
an assist from Babyface) and a version of Kim Carnes' "Bette
Davis Eyes." Duets (the movie) opens September 15, the soundtrack
comes out three days earlier.
Paltrow says she isn't the only would-be chanteuse in the family.
"My mother's mother also has a beautiful voice. People wanted her
to make records, but her husband wouldn't let her do it." She
says her uncle and grandfather were opera singers, too.
Although early listeners say Paltrow has a decent voice, most
critics say she should stick to the thespian thing and leave the
recording world to Christina and Britney wannabes. And Paltrow
agrees, at least for now.
"[Huey] would say, 'You have to make a record,' and I'd say,
'I'm just happy to sing with you, Huey.' I've got my hands full
with my day job. I don't think I want to ever do a record."
