TORONTO (Reuters) - Gwyneth Paltrow, directed by her father in the
dark comedy ``Duets,'' said on Saturday her biggest challenge while
making the film was trying to be a ``grown-up'' as her father
struggled with throat cancer.
Bruce Paltrow and his Oscar-winning daughter were attending the
world premiere of ``Duets'' at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film began shooting only three weeks after Paltrow -- who was
diagnosed with throat cancer while the film was in pre-production --
completed radiation therapy.
``He was very, very sick and not himself. My biggest challenge was to
be grown up and professional and not be a scared daughter,'' Paltrow
told a news conference.
The older Paltrow, who is in good health now, said once filming began
in Vancouver, the production provided a welcome distraction.
``I was lucky to have the movie to have something else to think
about,'' he said. ``When you (went) to sleep, you had to think about
what to shoot tomorrow instead of will I be here to shoot tomorrow.''
The film, a comedy about six misfits who adore karaoke and seek the
attention and spotlight afforded by performing is Bruce Paltrow's
second feature. The film also stars Andre Braugher, singer Huey
Lewis, Maria Bello and Paul Giamatti and Scott Speedman.
All the actors, except for Speedman, have real singing parts in the
film. But Paltrow, who has a surprisingly competent singing voice,
has no plans to embark on a recording career.
``I'll stick to my day job...(Singing) makes me scared, vulnerable
and uncomfortable in ways you don't when you're acting,'' she said,
adding she is presently filming ``Possession,'' an adaptation of the
A.S. Byatt novel.
``Duets,'' a project that was five years in the making, also includes
Andre Braugher, an actor known more for his gritty, dramatic
portrayals than light-hearted comedy.
Braugher, perhaps best know for his role in television's ''Homicide:
Life on the Streets,'' said he found singing karaoke ''oddly
exhilarating'' and accepted the role partly because Paltrow directed
him in an episode of the show years ago.
``I found it (''Duets'') to be as compelling as any of my previous
roles,'' he said.
``Duets'' opens Sept. 15 across North America.
