DRESS FOR EXCESS
People magazine's annual ''Best & Worst Dressed'' issue hit newsstands
today. The magazine praises the chicness of Charlize Theron, Gwyneth
Paltrow, and Catherine Zeta-Jones; the casual-preppy look favored by
Princes William and Harry; and the gutsiness of risk-takers Kate
Hudson, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Lopez, and Russell Crowe. It
rails against Gillian Anderson's armpit hair, Juliette Binoche's
shapeless Oscar gown, Cynthia Nixon's visible panty lines, and Kathie
Lee Gifford's braless look. Venus Williams gets a thumbs up, but
sister Serena Williams gets a thumbs down.
Maybe they should have waited a week though. Just imagine what the
People people would have had to say about the outfits displayed at
last night's MTV Video Music Awards. Surprise guest Michael Jackson
may have displayed casual cool in his leather jacket and V-neck T-
shirt, but what about the fishing vest Lance Bass was wearing, or
the fishing caps and fedoras many of the women wore, or the Navajo
trading post outfits worn by Destiny's Child, or Alicia Keys' snood,
or Macy Gray's dress that bore her album's release date on the front
and the words ''Buy It!'' on the rear, or Britney Spears, who was
wearing a live python?
