Globes Set In Orbit
- StudioBriefing, 25 January 1999
In what is generally regarded as a dress rehearsal for the
Oscars, Saving Private Ryan (1998) and Shakespeare in Love
(1998) took top honors Sunday night at the 56th annual
Golden Globes awards ceremonies in Beverly Hills. The major
surprise of the evening came when Jim Carrey was named best
actor in a dramatic movie for The Truman Shoe. He beat out
Tom Hanks, Ian McKellen and Nick Nolte. Carrey called the
award "a shocker" for him, too. "I mean, if you look back
at some of my earlier dramatic work in films like Earth
Girls Are Easy (1989) and Once Bitten (1985), I might have
seen this coming, but I really wasn't expecting it," he
joked. Michael Caine won the award for best actor in a
comedy for his role in Little Voice (1998). He, too, called
the award "a shock." The Elizabethan costume dramas,
Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Elizabeth earned (1998) stars
Gwyneth Paltrow and Cate Blanchett best actress honors in
the comedy and drama categories respectively. The award for
best director went to Steven Spielberg for Saving Private
Ryan (1998).
