Is Shakespeare In Love Really British?
- StudioBriefing, 10 February 1999
Responding to questions about whether Shakespeare in Love (1998),
which garnered 13 Oscar nominations Tuesday, is actually a
"British" film, given that its entire $25-million budget was
contributed by Disney's Miramax, the film's producer, David
Parfitt, told today's (Wednesday) London Independent: "We are
most definitely a British film.... In fact, the entire crew was
British, from the carpenter to the director, and so were all of
the cast, bar three -- Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Affleck Americans and
Geoffrey Rush Australian. All of the locations were in the UK,
and of the $25-million budget, $20 million was spent in the UK."
