Basically, the only sure way Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck can squelch
the steady stream of rumors that they're still together is to find
another someone pretty, hop down to Vegas for a quickie wedding, and
immediately start the procreation process.
Since that scenario hasn't happened (and is fairly unlikely), columnists
Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith report that Gwynnie and Benny have
been spending lots of quality time on the Canadian set of Affleck's
heist thriller Reindeer Games. Sources "close to the couple" tell Beck
and Smith that furthermore, the couple have been giving each other the
warm fuzzies for several months now, despite their claims of being just
"good friends."
Paltrow and Affleck announced their amicable split at the beginning of
1999. The ensuing civility — nay, chumminess — has led cynics to
believe that no two humans could possibly handle a breakup so graciously
unless they were still together and just pulling the wool over
everyone's eyes. Evidence includes the fact that Paltrow thanked Affleck
when receiving a Best Actress Golden Globe for Shakespeare in Love;
Affleck's appearance as Paltrow's Saturday Night Live guest host; and
recent reports that the couple will work together in the dramatic Bounce.
Beck and Smith hint that Affleck's new Hollywood pad — 8,000 square
feet with an elevator, canyon views, and the obligatory pool and spa —
could be a sweet love nest for himself and Paltrow when Bounce starts
filming this summer in L.A.
Meanwhile, Affleck's movie Reindeer Games was also in the news this week
in a completely unrelated story. The San Francisco Chronicle reported
Thursday that a young indie filmmaker was shot, execution style, during
a robbery early Wednesday morning. Confusion arose when it was noted
that the victim, Shayne Worcester, produced a film titled Reindeer
Games. However, Worcester, 29, released his low-budget psychological
thriller in 1996 along with three friends; the currently in-production
Games is directed by John Frankenheimer and penned by Ehren Kruger.
