Paltrow Proves Her Pipes May 5, 1999 http://mrshowbiz.go.com/news/Todays_Stories/990505/gwynethpaltrow050599.html Sing along: "Her name is Gwyneth, she is an actress, with loads of golden hair, and a new tal-ent to share…" Monday night, Gwyneth Paltrow took to the Copacabana stage and wowed a celebrity crowd with her rendition of Sheryl Crow's "I Shall Believe." The New York Daily News says that her calm performance belied some major jitters. "I was so nervous," she says. The New York Post says the Shakespeare in Love star was seen pacing backstage, worrying about another number with singer Phoebe Snow and Tony-nominated Stockard Channing (better known as Rizzo from Grease). The trio successfully covered the Rolling Stones' hit "Satisfaction." Says Snow, "Gwyneth has chops! I want her to work with me. We can make her a real rocker!" She wasn't just a hit with Snow and such other guests as Paul Newman and James Naughton, who attended the benefit for off-Broadway's Blue Light Theater Company. Paltrow told the News that her entertainment suitors may soon include record company reps. "I guess they found out there's a soundtrack to Duets," she says, referring to the movie she just completed with her father Bruce in which she plays a karaoke chanteuse. A career shift isn't in the cards for the multitalented Paltrow (readers queasy from her perfection will find bags stowed in the seat pockets in front of them), who says she's still reeling from her Oscar win. "People ask me now how my life has changed since winning the Oscar, and I don't know what to say because I don't feel different," she says, according to the News. "It's almost like it's too big, too mind- blowing. I always think of myself as an underdog, not someone who's viewed the way people are wanting to view me now." Pass that bag over this way, wouldja? They could view her as a goodwill ambassador soon: At the benefit, Paltrow asked U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke if she could visit the refugees in Yugoslavia. According to the Post, Holbrooke said yes, and took down Gwynnie's digits.
