Still trying to figure out the state of Ben and Gwyn's union? Well,
judging by speculation in the New York papers, things are only going
to get more complicated.

The New York Post insisted last weekend that Affleck and Paltrow
would attend the March 21 Oscar ceremony arm in arm, a move that
surely would set tongues a-wagging.

But now the New York Daily News counters by saying that Paltrow, a
frontrunner for the Best Actress statue for Shakespeare in Love,
will arrive on the red carpet with her father, director Bruce
Paltrow, with whom she's currently filming the karaoke drama Duets.

Of course, that doesn't mean that she couldn't hook up with buddy
Ben on the apres-ceremony party circuit. After all, last year
Affleck and Good Will Hunting pal Matt Damon shared their winning
night with their moms, celebrating later on with girlfriends Paltrow
and Winona Ryder.

But even though chances are slim they'll attend the awards together,
the duo still remains on surprisingly good terms. You'll recall they
sat together at the Golden Globes, and Gwyn, reportedly sporting
diamond earrings given to her by Ben, thanked him in her acceptance
speech. A few days later, he turned up while she was hosting Saturday
Night Live, with both poking fun at their high-profile split.

What does all this mean? Given the fickle nature of romance in
Hollywood, we wouldn't dare venture a guess, although the Post claims
the onetime lovebirds sent each other flowers and jewelry on
Valentine's Day. Go figure.
