Dodgers notes: Making the cut: Dodgers trim roster
BY TONY JACKSON, Staff Writer
SAN FRANCISCO -- In advance of the playoffs, the Dodgers whittled their roster to 28 players after Sunday's
season-ending, 4-3 victory over San Francisco. The final three cuts probably won't come until Tuesday or
possibly even Wednesday , when the club is scheduled to begin a National League Division Series against the
New York Mets.
The Dodgers plan to keep only 10 pitchers, meaning two more will be cut. The most likely candidates to miss
out are right-hander Aaron Sele and either lefty Mark Hendrickson, righty Chad Billingsley or righty Elmer
Dessens. The Mets' li neup is heavily left-handed, which might play in Hendrickson's favor, and Little has
repeatedly said Billingsley will work out of the bullpen in the playoffs, which probably works in his favor.
The other cut will be catcher Einar Diaz, who nevertheless will remain with the club and travel in case there
is an injury to either Russell Martin or Toby Hall.
Rookie James Loney's spot on the playoff roster probably was assured because Nomar Garciaparra continues
to struggle with a painful right oblique strain. If not, it became assured when Loney homered for the third
time in six at-bats in the second inning.
The Dodgers will keep eight infielders and five outfielders.
PITCHING PLANS: One day after saying Derek Lowe will start the playoff opener, Little said rookie left-hander
Hong-Chih Kuo will get the ball for Game 2. A converted reliever, Kuo made his first major-league start with
six shutout innin gs at Shea Stadium on Sept. 8 and has been more or less solid ever since.
"I like him pitching there because of the success he had that first start," Dodgers manager Grady Little said.
Greg Maddux will start Game 3 on Saturday at Dodger Stadium. Little didn't announce a Game 4 starter,
but he did say he planned on going with a four-man rotation against the Mets. That means Brad Penny almost
certainly will get the nod if his balky lower back holds up.
PICK SIGNS: First baseman Kyle Orr, the Dodgers' fourth-round pick in this year's amateur draft, has
agreed to terms on a $435,000 signing bonus, and the Dodgers are expected to pay him an additional
$100,000 in college tuition. Orr, wh o turned 18 three days ago, is a left-handed hitter out Lambrick Park
High School in Victoria, Canada.
"Because of our relationship with the Dodgers, and specifically (scouting director) Logan White, I had
no doubt we would get this done," said Matt Sosnick, Orr's San Francisco-based agent. "Although we
were (far apart) for a while, i t was always a respectful conversation." The Dodgers now have signed
all of their first nine picks for a total of $5.540 million.
