FED CUP 06 - One and One

Day one of the Fed Cup finals gave two very different matches in Charleroi.
Italy's Schiavone took advantage of her younger opponent's stage nerves, and
defeated inexperienced Kirsten 6-0 6-3. The second match of the day was a
ragged topsy turfy grinding battle filled with tension and very emotionally
animated players. Justine was triumphant over Pennetta 6-4 7-5.
Flavia Pennetta started the match on fire, and was up 3-0 in the first set,
much to the Belgian locals chagrin. Lack of match play from being out of the
US OPEN with a wrist injury wasn't too apparent from the Italian, but as
Justine finally found her range on this very fast indoor surface, Pennetta's
lack of match focus waivered.
JH2's performance was reminiscent of the classic Justine matches, full of
fighting spirit and plenty of determination with a three game deficit in each
set, as opposed to some of this season's easy flawless tennis with a big
letdown in the final grasp for match points. Belgium has now tied 1-1 with
Italy. On Sunday the line-up will be Justine against Schiavone in the first
match, and Kirsten versus Pennetta in the second. The doubles match will be
played if another draw occurs in singles to crown the new Fed Cup 2006
champions.
