THE BELGIAN CANDIDATE

December is election month in the world of sports, and Justine is a candidate
for various awards this year.
Justine is competing against two athletics stars, Kim Gevaert and Thia
Hellebaut for Belgium Sports Person of The Year (Sportive de l'anee) as voted
by the national journalists. She won Belgium's highest honor back in 2004 for
her Gold medal victory at the Athens Olympic games, and in 2003 for the
outstanding breakthrough tennis year with two grand slam trophies. Justine's
Fed Cup team is also nominated for Sporting Team of 2006. The results will be
announced on December 17, 2006 at the Sport Gala 2006 award show held in Ostend
, Northern Belgium.
Justine could become Laureus World Sportswoman Of The Year 2006.
The challengers are very tough in this award competition. She is up against
Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo, and international athletics stars Jelena
Isinbayeva, Carolina Kluft and Sanya Richards.
The #1 tennis player in the world is also a candidate for the 2006 Academy
Athlete Of The Year presented in the United States by the USA Today newspaper,
and MSNBC.com. The winner is chosen by you the sports fans, so cast your
ballot now online right here. Votes are being taken from now till December 25.
The female and male winner will be announced December 26 on the USA Today
website, MSNBC.com and the United States Sports Academy official site.
Supporters will be keeping an eye on Justine's election results, but she's
focused on preparation for the 2007 tennis season. The Belgian heroine started
training ten days ago, and the program is moving forward smoothly.
Hungarian Justine fans have a special treat this weekend. On Saturday December
9 she'll be in Debrecen, Hungary for an exhibition match against feisty Jelena
Jankovic, and go up tandem with the talented Serbian to face off with the even
feistier Martina Navratilova in a doubles match. Another tennis legend will
also be at Debrecen as a special guest, the king of tennis feisty - Ilie Nastase.
Next week Justine will be in Paris for a day on December 14, to be honoured in
a ceremony for her UNESCO designation as Champion of Sport.
