Davenport, Hewitt Honored as US Open Series Winners
by Jason Brown Tuesday, August 31, 2004
Lindsay Davenport and Lleyton Hewitt, the champions of the inaugural
US Open Series, were honored Tuesday night at the US Open with trophies
commemorating their remarkable achievement.
Davenport began an amazing hard court run playing in her home state of
California, claiming consecutive US Open Series titles at the Bank of
the West Classic and the JPMorgan Chase Open en route to the US Open
Series women's title.
The veteran American tallied a total of 100 bonus challenge points,
and secured the US Open Series title on the virtue of a tie-break -
Davenport's total of nine US Open Series match wins were four more
than the second-place player Amelie Mauresmo of France.
Hewitt gathered steam throughout the US Open Series, and capped the
series with a bang, claiming wins in the final two US Open Series
men's events, the Legg Mason Tennis Classic and the TD Waterhouse Cup,
to earn enough bonus challenge points to narrowly edge past Andy Roddick.
The Aussie finished the US Open Series with 155 bonus challenge points
and also won a match-win tie-break over second-place Roddick.
In Arthur Ashe Stadium, USTA Chief Executive, Professional Tennis
Arlen Kantarian presented Davenport with her award, while USTA Executive
Director and COO Lee Hamilton anointed Hewitt as the men's winner.
If Davenport or Hewitt should go on to win the 2004 US Open, each could
pocket $500,000 of US Open bonus prize money.
The US Open Series is the six-week summer tennis season including 10
ATP and WTA Tour professional tournaments in North America leading up
to and linked to the US Open, including the potential for the top men's
and women's finishers to earn up to $1.3 million in US Open bonus prize
money. The top men's and women's finishers in the series will receive
50 percent more of whatever they win in singles at the US Open; the
second-place finisher receives 25 percent more; and the third-place
finisher receives 10 mpercent more.
