Hewitt lucky to make Wimbledon
May 20, 2005 - 7:00PM
Lleyton Hewitt has revealed he never had a chance to play
the French Open and is lucky not to be missing Wimbledon as well.
Hewitt, the former world No.1, on Thursday officially withdrew
from next week's French Open at Roland Garros with a broken rib
and now has one month to prepare for the third grand slam of the
year at Wimbledon.
The world No.2 slipped down the stairs in his Palm Beach home in
the north of Sydney and believes if he wasn't carrying clothes at
the time the damage could have been far worse.
"I was carrying my change of clothes to put in the car and as I
have gone down the steps I slipped," Hewitt told Channel Seven.
"Cause I was carrying stuff, which was probably a blessing, cause
I probably would have broken my wrist if I was trying to save
myself (from falling)."
A former Wimbledon champion, Hewitt said he would be as determined
as ever when he finally gets back on the court in preparation for
the year's most prestigious slam.
He plans to play in the Queen's tournament as a lead-in to Wimbledon.
"I tell you I will be as hungry as ever getting on the grass," he said.
"I will be ready to run through walls and fences to get into
the All-England club."
Hewitt will spent the next few weeks at home with fiancee Bec
Cartwright, who is expecting the couple's first child in October.
