Tennis giants bid for Hewitt Leo Schlink, tennis 15jul05 LLEYTON Hewitt is poised to become Australia's highest-paid sportsman as a bidding war erupts among the world's leading tennis clothing manufacturers for the Grand Slam champion's services. Hewitt will appear today in unbranded gear as the world No. 2 leads Australia's Davis Cup quarter-final charge against Argentina in Sydney after deciding not to continue with Nike. Sponsored by the US giant for the past eight years, Hewitt is being frantically courted by a string of global heavyweights who view the 24-year-old baseliner as the perfect promotional tool. Nike is keen for Hewitt to renew his contract, which ended at Wimbledon, but the South Australian wants a change. Hewitt is the highest-ranked player to emerge on the open market since Andy Roddick's switch from Reebok to Lacoste, a transfer which is believed to have earned the American between $4 million and $6 million a year. Hewitt's manager Rob Aivatoglou yesterday confirmed Hewitt was considering approaches from rival manufacturers. "We have decided to move away from Nike," Aivatoglou said. "We have entered into discussions with a number of international manufacturers. "I think it is a really important time for Lleyton and the direction Nike were looking to take the relationship didn't sit comfortably with where we wanted to take Lleyton." Hewitt ranked third in the Business Review Weekly's list of Australia's top-earning sportspeople in 2004. Greg Norman's Great White Shark Enterprises ensured the golfer remained at No. 1 with earnings of $18 million. Liverpool footballer Harry Kewell was second with an annual return of $15 million with Hewitt next on $13.7 million, a figure that included prizemoney and endorsements. Hewitt has already pocketed more than $1.4 million this season in prizemoney alone. If Reebok, Puma, adidas or Fila were to back the Australian, the deal would be worth millions a year. Most endorsements are performance-linked with bonuses tied to rankings and tournament achievements. Already sponsored by racquet company Yonex – which also manufactures clothes– Hewitt is among the elite players able to command massive guarantees simply to contest tournaments outside the four majors. Given Norman's increasingly infrequent forays into the playing arena and Kewell's injury woes, Hewitt could emerge as Australia's best-paid sportsmen when he strikes a new clothing deal. The Wimbledon and US Open winner's management has been constantly sought out throughout his career with a host of offers, including television advertisements. But the Adelaide right-hander has steadfastly rejected proposals which might have compromised his career. His burgeoning celebrity, measured in suffocating interest in his imminent marriage to actress Bec Cartwright, has triggered a fresh wave of commercial interest. When news broke of the couple's engagement and Cartwright's pregnancy, media monitors were staggered at the level of interest in the pair.
