1.It has often been assumed that Lenin's party had from the outset
deliberately worked to establish the single-party system.But this
view is not borne out by the facts.It was only in the civil war,
when the Bolsheviks were often unable to tell foe from friend,
that they actually suppressed the parties of the opposition and
established their own political monopoly,gradually and gropingly
,under the pressure of events.
2.The point of separating the two aspects of the Great Depression-
domestic economic difficulty and the international financial panic
-is to observe that it was the international side of the depression
that governments set out to remedy,rather than attempting to
stimulate the domestic economy.Indeed,those governments that threw
their budgets into deficit in the effort to create new jobs or
assist the unemployed promptly provoked international speculation
against their own currencies.
