Independent Clauses ( 獨立子句 ) * Independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction are separated by commas. (1) Two independent clauses connected by a coordinating conjunction are separated by a comma. (2) Two independent clauses not connected by a coordinating conjunction are separated by a semicolon. (3) A semicolon is used to separate independent clauses that are joined by a coordinating conjunction but are heavily punctuated with commas internally. (4) Short independent clauses, when used in a series( consists of at least three elements ) with a coordinating conjunction preceding the final clause , may be separated by commas. Comma Splice:use of a comma between two independent clauses not joined by a coordinating conjunction. Run-together Sentence:omitting punctuation between two independent clauses not by a conjunction. (5) Connect two independent clauses by a comma and a coordinating conjunction if the two clauses are logically equal importance. (6) Connect two independent clauses by a semicolon if they are close enough in thought to make one sentence and you want to omit the conjunction. (7) Write the two independent clauses as separated sentences if you wish to give them separated emphasis.
