JOL SET FOR `DIGNIFIED` EXIT
Speculation is rife that Ajax manager Henk ten Cate will be appointed
Chelsea's first-team coach next week - and his arrival in London could provide
Martin Jol with a dignified route out of Tottenham.
The Blues are understood to have offered Ten Cate a 2.1m-a-year salary to join
forces with Avram Grant in a complicated managerial structure at
Stamford Bridge.
According to The Sun, the Dutchman has accepted the position of first-team
coach and will work alongside Grant, who will remain as team manager and still
have an input on selection and tactics.
Pressed on the salient matter of who will actually be the club's manager, 'an
insider' reported: "This is Rom's attempt at making Grant's appointment work.
Ten Cate will fill the gaps. He'll be the coaching brain, he'll wind up the
players and motivate them."
Intriguingly, The Times says that Grant has yet to meet the former Barcelona
number two, but has given his blessing to an appointment that would strengthen
his position at the club.
With Jose Mourinho's four assistants leaving Chelsea in the wake of his
departure two weeks ago, the Israeli certainly requires support.
Another place alongside Grant on the Stamford Bridge bench is set to become
available during the forthcoming international break when Steve Clarke is
expected to finalise his own exit from the club.
Yet the repercussions of Ten Cate's appointment may spread far beyond the Blues
and add to the speculation surrounding Jol's future at Tottenham.
As The Times speculates: 'His Dutch compatriot, Martin Jol, will be closely
monitoring events at the Amsterdam club, who have approached him before, as he
seeks a dignified exit from Tottenham Hotspur.'
