Some people call him A.I., on the basketball court he's the Answer,
to the world, he's NBA superstar Allen Iverson.
Now I've got him right here, in the studio.
Next on "Quite Frankly."
----------------------------------------------------------------------
SAS: Iverson commends attention with sky-high scoring average, and a
take-no-prisoner style, atheletically and verbally.
Charles Barkley: The thing about him I respect and admire is he's
tough. If you hit him, he's gonna keep coming back.
Anchorman: I'm telling you: this little guy, he is something! He takes
the beating...
John Thompson: Allen is probably one of the most tough bodily,
tough-minded, atheletes I've ever encountered.
A.I: We talkin' 'bout PRACTICE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
SAS: He is one of the most prolific offensive players to ever
play this game, and, arguably--no disrespect to Nate Archibald
or Isiah Thomas, but maybe the greatest little man to ever play
the game of basketball. Give it up--Allen Iverson. (Applause)
SAS: I see you looking around and everything. What's up with
that? Do you like the studio?
AI: I love it, man.
SAS: You like it?
AI: I mean, you know, you came a long way. (aud. laughs)
SAS: Pull your hat up a little bit so that everyboy can see
your face, just a little bit, just a little bit.
AI: They know me. (pulls, inducing woos from aud.)
[Q1]
SAS: Let me ask you a quick question. First of all, before we
begin anything else--the Sixers. I gotta get into the Sixers.
Obviously you guys finished 43-39 last year; went to the first
round of the playoffs before losing to the eventual Eastern
Conference champion, the Detroit Pistons. How do you like this
team right now? You got a new coach.
AI: I love him, man. The situation is just beautiful. It's
like--out of all the hardships and going through everything
in my life, you know, and the last ten years, the environment
is going to be like a--I like it. You know what I'm saying?
It's like--I have a relationship with Maurice Cheeks, you know
we call each other--we friends. We've always been friends.
He was my coach. And when I was going through all my little
things with Coach Brown, he'd tap me and say, 'AI, chill, man.
It's alright. It'll be alright. Hold your head. Things'll get
better' He went through those things with me. So now, you know,
he know who he's coaching. He's been there with me before. I
am all for him. I'm happy just like that. The environment seems
the way it's supposed to be. Billy has done everything right.
SAS: Billy King? He's talking about Billy King, President of
Basketball operations, and the GM for the 76ers.
AI: Definitely. He's made sure that everything is working. I
mean, he's earned his money, meantime.
[Q2]
SAS: Let me read a quote. This is what Mr. Allen Iverson had
to say about Maurice Cheeks. I'm gonna read this quote for
you, alright? "I didn't want to do it in front of the camera.
But I wanted to take him in the back and kiss him on the
mouth." What-wh-what's up with that, Iverson?
AI: Hey look, I love him, don't--don't get it twisted. (aud.
laughs)It ain't like that. But I mean, that's just love, man.
That's how I felt, man. It was like--I finally got the coach
that I really, really wanted to play for. You know, I was
thinking if I could play for coach Thompson, that would be
beautiful. I would love that. But anybody else, I would rather
it'd be Maurice Cheeks. You know, we were going after him.
Portland wouldn't let us talk to him. It was just crazy, but now,
he's right here with us. He's a part of the Philadelphia family,
I hope. You know, I accept him as part of the Philadelphia family.
We're just ready to go. I'm just looking forward to playing
basketball.
[Q3]
SAS: But, with all due respect, what is Mo Cheeks gonna bring
outta you that we haven't seen already? I mean, you averaged
over 30 points like three times. I mean, do you know you came
in the league in 1996 and you've averaged more than 27 points
per game and nobody in the league has ever averaged that in
their career--in their first nine seasons? Do you know that?
AI: That's right.
SAS: So, what are we supposed to expect from Mo Cheeks that
we haven't seen from you?
AI: Like I said, it's the environment, man. A lot the times
when you see me scoring those points, I was upset, a lot of
the times, about different situations. And now, it's not
about just being mad about your work situation. You just want
to go to work.
[Q4]
SAS: But what were the kind of things that you were upset
about in terms of the work situation? Give us an example.
AI: The environment, just the environment. Everybody uptight.
You know, everybody being like they were mad all the time.
Everybody was at each other. And it wasn't right. And this
situation. This is a guy if you some problem with, it's
something that you did. I really believe that in my heart.
It's like that with me and him. I can't wait for somebody
to act like they don't pay attention to what he'd got to say.
SAS: What're you gonna do?
AI: (shakes his head)I don't even want to say what I am gonna
say on camera. I can't do it. It's not HBO.
SAS: It's not HBO, it's not. Well, you can say it to me in a
comfortable and acceptable fashion.
AI: Well, they're gonna know that I am fighting with Maurice
Cheeks. They're gonna know that he's running this ship. I'm
just one of his generals, just one of his captains, one of
his soldiers. That's all. But I'm a veteran soldier. I want
that to stand up to whatever. He can be the boss. I'd be the
underboss.
SAS: Weren't you this way with some other coaches to some
degree though?
AI: Yeah, absolutely, man. Everything with my whole situation
has always been misconstrued. If you're inside that person,
you know what's going on. If not, it'd always look like Allen
Iverson the bad guy, the guy that can't get along with his
coach. Why wouldn't I get along with the guy that wants to
accomplish the same thing I'm trying to accomplish. I don't
have a ego. I mean, I don't get on TV and talk about Allen
Iverson, the greatest basketball player in the world, this,
that, and third. Turn the TV on, and come to a game, and
watch, and judge for yourself. You know what I mean? I don't
have no ego with no teammates or nothing like that. I am just
me. I am satisfied with who God made me, as a basketball
player, as a person, as a father, as a friend, as a brother.
Anything, man. I don't have a problem with people. That's
how it got started to be an argument, instead of us holding
in an inside situation. You started to talk about it. Everybody
started to talk about it. It was on ESPN. The "practice" whole
thing. How can you be everything you said I was, if you don't
practice? People make a dig deal over the practice thing coz
I was mad. I was upset after a meeting with the coach and
Billy King. I was upset, and I shouldn't have did the thing.
SAS: Well let me tell you this. This is why I'm happy to have
you on the show. Because all those things that were misconstrued,
you're gonna have an opportunity to talk about it. It ain't
gonna be just 3 minutes. You got a whole platform. Stephen A.
Smith, on Quite Frankly. We'll be right back. The man's in the
house--Allen Iverson. Check it out.
