MR. 76ER
If Iverson makes it through the two remaining seasons on his contract
and the four on the extension, it would give him 13 with the 76ers,
more than any other member of the franchise since it moved from Syracuse
to Philadelphia in 1963. Considering how rocky the start was, who would
have thought Iverson would have a longer 76ers tenure than the likes
of Maurice Cheeks, Julius Erving, Billy Cunningham or Bobby Jones? ...
New 76ers coach Randy Ayers is considering featuring Iverson at point
guard when Eric Snow goes to the bench. That could wind up limiting the
minutes of former University of Miami guard John Salmons, who is coming
off a solid summer league. ...
In the wake of Iverson's deal came word the 76ers are working on a
similar extension for Snow, who also has an opt-out after this season.
With impending 2004 free agent Kevin Garnett also discussing an
extension, these are just the latest examples of how outside teams often
delude themselves when it comes to preparing for future free-agent markets
that never seem to materialize.
