Division One Expands in 2005
Division One will expand to 18 teams in 2005 and the two stage system will be
replaced by a single seasonlong league. The two-stage and V-goal systems were
hallmarks of the early J.League, but the rising popularity and understanding
of the game have now made them unnecessary. Draws were introduced to J1 in
2003, and the changes of 2005 will bring the J.League still closer to the
world's top leagues. The increased number of matches in J1 will also be
financially beneficial to the clubs. At the end of 2004, the top two teams in
J2 will be promoted automatically and the bottom team in J1 will play off home
and away against the third placed team in J2 for the final J1 slot.
