NY Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin gets high praise from NBA Commissioner David
Stern during 2012 All-Star Weekend
(Stern has his own case of Linsanity)
By Mitch Lawrence / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
ORLANDO — David Stern is suffering from a case of Linsanity.
During his State of the NBA address Saturday night, the NBA commissioner went
out of his way to heap praise on the Knicks’ new playmaker.
“I think it’s great for the league and great for Jeremy,” Stern said. “
And my guess is that in the just-concluded D-League all-star game (played
here), there were more scouts than ever in the history of that game.”
Lin played in the D-League last season. If the NBA’s developmental league
did not exist, there is a chance that Lin would have thrown in the towel on
the NBA and gone overseas.
Based on his surprisingly effective play and the Knicks winning eight of 11
games since Mike D’Antoni made him his point guard, Lin has been one of the
biggest stories of All-Star weekend. After playing in the Rising Stars game
Friday, he participated Saturday in his first autograph-signing session at a
local mall, signing for several hundred fans.
As he has turned the Knicks’ season around, the league has had the benefit
of getting extra attention because of his rags-to-riches story.
“We’re proud of him and it’s a great story,” Stern said. “He got what
every player wants to get — the opportunity. It seems clear to me that there
was an extraordinary effort from the moment that Jeremy played in his first
summer league game (in 2010) to when he was given his opportunity to improve
his skills, his physical training and the like.
(Stern
“He was a much better player when he got his shot. And he took advantage of
it, and I think that’s why it’s a universal story of the underdog stepping
forward.”
During All-Star Weekend, T-shirts featuring the Knicks colors and logo and “
Linsanity” have been one of the biggest sellers.
