Knicks Increase Intensity, and Winning Streak Hits Four

The smile is back on Carmelo Anthony’s face, broad and beaming
and wholly subject to interpretation. There is happiness there, to
be sure, but also likely relief and perhaps some satisfaction.
甜瓜笑的好開心，大家都很開心又滿意。
Yet there is no mistaking Anthony’s mood shift over the last
seven days, coinciding with a new Knicks winning streak and a
change in coaches from Mike D’Antoni to Mike Woodson.
甜瓜過去一週心情都很好，尼克換教練之後開始連勝。
The good times continued Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden as
the Knicks rolled past the lowly Toronto Raptors, 106-87,
stretching their winning streak to four games.
今天也是美好的一天～宰掉暴龍，拿下四連勝。
Anthony is still searching for his jump shot (5 for 15), but he
put together a complete game, with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5
assists and 3 steals, along with some animated defense and many
gleeful grins along the way.
甜瓜的跳投還在找手感，但談笑間還是拿下17分8板5助3抄，同時在防守端

“He’s been playing phenomenal, he really has,” Amar’e
Stoudemire said. “He’s been facilitating. Teams have been
double-teaming him; he’s been doing a great job of finding guys
when they’re open. He’s been a great leader out there on the
court. He’s playing great defensively. So that’s something that
we look forward to from him.”

Anthony had chafed under D’Antoni’s direction and sagged through
the Knicks’ six-game losing streak, ultimately leading to D’
Antoni’s resignation last week. Anthony’s renewal and Woodson’s
firm hand have sparked the Knicks’ longest winning streak since
early February, when they won seven in a row. Each of the last
four wins has been by 14 points or greater.

“I think now we’re playing at a different level, a very high
level,” Anthony said.

Defense is the Knicks’ new calling card, and it keyed their final
push Tuesday. Jeremy Lin and Anthony had back-to-back steals,
leading to fast-break dunks for Lin and Tyson Chandler.

Anthony added another dunk, making it an 18-point game with 4
minutes 35 seconds left.

“It’s fun to watch,” Woodson said, adding: “Make no mistake
about it — it was our defense that got us the spurt that we
needed. That’s what good teams are supposed to do.”

Stoudemire played one of his best games since the All-Star break,
with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and a strong 8-for-13 shooting
performance. Lin had 18 points and 10 assists as the Knicks
improved to 22-24 heading into a road game Wednesday night against
the Philadelphia 76ers.

It will be the first true test of the Knicks’ newfound tenacity.
It was just 10 days ago that Anthony and Stoudemire were benched
for their lackluster effort in a 12-point loss to the first-place
76ers. Three days later, D’Antoni resigned.

While they have a loose grip on the last playoff spot in the
Eastern Conference, the Knicks are just four games behind the
76ers (26-20) for the Atlantic Division lead. Overtaking them
would mean a top-four playoff spot. It is a goal the Knicks are
embracing.

“I think tomorrow is a huge game,” said Chandler, who had 17
points and 2 blocks. “I think both teams know it.”

Lin was steady all night, resilient and occasionally brilliant
with the ball. He sustained a bloody nose in the first quarter —
which now seems routine — after an incidental smack from DeMar
DeRozan, and was repeatedly banged around in the paint. But he
kept attacking, and scored or assisted on the Knicks’ first four
baskets of the second half.

They nearly blew the game open when the Raptors’ Aaron Gray lost
his cool, giving the Knicks a 5-point possession with an off-the-
ball foul and two technical fouls. The lead jumped to 15, and
Toronto never got closer than 8 in the fourth quarter.

“They are a tenacious, different team,” Raptors Coach Dwane
Casey said. “It’s amazing, their tenacity, the way they attack.
If you don’t meet it, it takes you right out.”

Anthony is still hearing some boos during pregame introductions,
and he only emboldened critics when he acknowledged that he had
not been giving a full effort this season.

“I think in the last three games, my focus just was to have an
energy that I haven’t had the first part of the season,
especially on the defensive end,” Anthony said Monday.

energy now,” Woodson said before the game. “I’m the head coach.

Everybody’s got to play harder to get us where we need to go.”

Asked why Anthony would not have given the same effort in the
first two months of the season, Woodson said: “I can’t explain
it. I can’t explain that. I can’t. I wish I could. We probably
wouldn’t be sitting in this position that we’re sitting in
today, fighting for a playoff spot.”

REBOUNDS
Baron Davis missed his second straight game because of a strained
right hamstring. He is considered questionable for Wednesday’s
game in Philadelphia but is expected to be back by Friday at the
latest.
