Asia's Queen of ballads Fish Leong is bitten by the love bug. ============================================================================== LOVE is in the air for Fish Leong. Asia’s Queen of love ballads was happy to share details about her beau, dubbed Mr T by the Chinese media. They have been together for a year. He is Taiwan-born and studied in the United States, hence quite Westernised. “We converse in Mandarin and text each other in English. He can read Chinese but writing can be quite tricky,” she says. As the lucky man deals in wines, Leong now shows a new interest. Even as we speak, she becomes momentarily sidetracked by a bottle with a small label. “That’s my favourite – VCP. As long as it’s rosette, I’ll like it. I enjoy champagne – must have it for celebrations – and white wine,” she muses dreamily. What will become of her dizzying music career if she settles down? Leong says that family comes first so she would most likely reduce her workload. “Singing is something I really enjoy. So, while I may not be as busy then, I would like to continue exploring music and do some crossovers.” The 30-year-old Malaysian who is based in Taiwan was in town recently to promote her upcoming concert and latest album. Four years after her first concert in Malaysia, Leong will be back to wow fans next month. Fish Leong Today Is Our Valentine’s Day Live in Malaysia 2009 will be staged at Bukit Jalil on June 13. Will she have any guest performers for her show? “Since it’s my 10th anniversary as a singer and my second concert on home ground, I might even get my mother to join me on stage for a song,” she chuckles. “I’ll be singing Malaysian compositions as well as my Cantonese song Yuen Loi Nei Ya Cheung Gor Ngor Dik Gor (You Sang My Songs Before). I realised that many English-educated Chinese got to know my songs after listening to that one.” Fall in Love and Songs is her 10th and latest solo studio album. Released in January this year, the chart-topping album has sold more than her previous album j’Adore, which has already sold over one million copies in Asia. “This new album is lighter and more relaxed. The tune, Mei You Ru Guo, (No If) has a bit of rap and rock. I do hope people don’t think my songs are all sad love songs. So, I invited Gary Chaw to write the adorable PK.” She is currently in Ipoh for the filming of Malaysian singer Aniu’s star-studded movie Ice Kacang Puppy Love. The bubbly lass also has a cameo in SETTV Taiwanese romantic series Bai Quan Nv Wang or My Queen, which stars Taiwanese heartthrob Ethan Ruan Jing Tian. “All the songs from my latest album are featured in the series,” says Leong with pride. She plays a radio deejay in her small screen debut. Leong revealed that she has had countless offers to play female leads but had to turn them down due to her packed schedule. “With concerts, albums and endorsements all lined up, I needed to remain focused on my music.” She is probably one of the most decorated Chinese female singers, winning awards for her vocals, songs and albums in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, China and Hong Kong year after year. So much so that in 2006, she was entered into the Malaysian Book of Records as the Malaysian Chinese singer who has won the most awards. No mean feat for a smalltown (Kuala Pilah, Negri Sembilan) girl who started her career singing covers in a music cafe. Recently, she was among 12 Malaysian celebrities to volunteer their support for the inaugural Red Ribbon Celebrity Support Programme 2009/2010 initiated by Malaysia Aids Council (MAC) to change the public’s prejudice towards people with HIV/Aids, as well as educating them on the disease. Apart from promotional activities for the council’s new programme, Leong will be flying to China for an album promo tour next month. Fall in Love and Songs is available in record stores nationwide. Fish Leong Today Is Our Valentine’s Day Live in Malaysia 2009 concert, presented by Intimate, will be staged at Bukit Jalil Putra Indoor Stadium on June 13 at 8pm. Concert tickets are priced at RM278, RM238, RM188, RM158, RM118, RM98 and RM78.
