Gianluigi Buffon hopes that 2003 can see the Juventus goalkeeper finally
lifting the Champions’ League trophy and gives advice to Trap.
“This is my dream,” revealed the Italian Number 1, “but there are so
many favourites from Real Madrid, Milan, Inter, Manchester United and
Valencia to Barcelona.”
“Naturally,” he added, “Juventus are among them. The road is long and
dangerous, but we are accustomed to pulling something special out of the
hat.”
The last year has certainly been memorable for the ex-Parma man, winning
the Scudetto in his first year at the Stadio Delle Alpi.
“That title was a real surprise, because we didn’t really expect it at
that point of the campaign. Similarly, we just did not expect the second
round elimination from the World Cup two minutes from the final whistle.”
That Golden Goal put an end to Italy’s hopes and saw South Korea through,
but Buffon refused to join those who blamed referee Byron Moreno for the
upset.
“If anything,” he added, “I admire him for the courage shown in this
game.Italy needs to change its attitude and attack more.”
“The club sides have already turned that corner,” he added with a clear
signal to Giovanni Trapattoni, “but the Azzurri have not yet had time to
absorb this new trend. But something will change in the near future.”
Buffon also reserved a final thought for the controversial FIFA World
Player of the Year Award handed to Ronaldo.
“Roberto Carlos should have won that award,” he assured. “The votes
should reflect consistency, and Ronaldo simply did not have that this year.”
